I think in this particular style, Muse is an immensely better band. Undeniably more talented in musicianship and possibly more so in songwriting as well.

ludacris - You're trolling me pretty hard and are being a douche. When was I ever being e-peen-like about this? I don't like a band that you really like and I think they're incredibly bland. Learn to deal with life's little adversities.

salt - I disagree but I appreciate your thoughts. I've taken a music appreciation class too. I don't think it's that big a deal to understanding music really although I guess for some people who maybe weren't that knowledgeable in the first place it could help them somewhat of course.

I've learned to play a couple of instruments in my time (badly) and feel I feel I know a fair amount of music theory. I can recognize that RH is doing some of their music in time signatures other than the standard 4/4. I find it gimmicky and silly....but in a really bland way of course! Ha ha.

I also don't think it's necessary to understand that their songs aren't in 4/4 time to like RH either (just one example in the 'music theory' aspect). Certainly the vast majority of their fans just know that the music is quirky or different or that it really hits them emotionally and don't really think about whether it's 4/4 time or not.

So do these people lack the musical appreciation or theory to voice their approval for RH? Because I don't see them having to give their qualifications to show that their opinion matters. As long as they say, "RH is awesome and a huge influence on things" their opinion is evidently 'correct' whether they actually know anything about music theory or not.

I think it's incorrect to say, "once you've taken the class/learn more about music you can appreciate RH better." And to a certain extent I think it's a bit snobbish/condescending to think that and I'm sure you can understand where I'm coming from with that idea.

Similarly, I've taken several film-studies classes and know a little bit about that stuff. Not a big deal. I'm hardly an expert on any of that. But I have some education in there. But that doesn't stop me from thinking that some films that are widely regarded as great are overrated crap too. OMG...most experts agree that X film is just amazing...and I disagreed!!!

In short, I can go run out right now and take whatever classes you want me to and i'm pretty sure I'm going to come back and still think RH is lousy.

Radiohead is most certainly not the biggest act among our age. ESPECIALLY considering rap took a huge stride in popularity while we were younger, it's probably more focused on that.

If we want to exclude all the rap fans within our demographic and focus on rock, many don't think of them as a top band of our time. Hell, many don't like them.

I don't know what your demographic is; your group of 5 friends, this thread of Radiohead fans, etc, but it isn't right. Of course the majority of people ITT will be RH fans, the title says RH and those fans will come in and post how they agree.
Firstly, it says "greatest" band, not "most popular." If you want to do it that way, unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the people at the top of that list would be a pretty sad group.

ITT, it seems like all RH fans are "music experts" while every non RH fan is terrible with their music choice. Pretty comical actually

I don't understand the relationship between these 2 statements... You're 30 friends /= population. You're sample is rather irrelevant, but the justification for debunking RH is what I questioned.

the fact that some radiohead fans in this thread are kinda annoying (they are) doesn't make you any less of an idiot

LMAO at calling me an idiot for an opinionated topic.

I never once said that it was justified that my small sample meant I was right and RH fans were wrong. Simply stating that his idea of college students all knowing/loving/agreeing RH as being the best isn't totally correct. I'd love to somehow be able to poll atleast a large majority of college students country wide and get their opinion, but we know that really isn't possible. (Unless a Princeton Review guy reads 2p2)

If the thread had been titled "Radiohead Fans Unite!" I wouldn't have even opened it. But it asked a question about whether they were the greatest and I thought that meant it was okay for people who don't like them as much to have an opinion too.

FWIW, I used to think exactly the opposite of what you said to me: That it's easy to find those who have terrible taste in music....if they like Radiohead then the answer is yes. I no longer think that partly thanks to this thread and my attempts to approach this with an open mind.

perhaps we are not hanging out with hipster enough crowds, because to my knowledge none of my friends think they are the best either.

Your argument about rap being bigger among the college scene is lol. Among the general population of younger people, hip hop is arguably bigger then rock. Every college/Uni paper will have a list of their top played tracks, Rollingstone, Spin and other mags have top "college tracks/albums" and hip hop is never on there. But thanks for asking your posting on your facebook page asking if people like Radiohead. I wonder if you can get extra credit for that.

Which individual hip hop act do you think is bigger then a Radiohead, Weezer, Modest Mouse etc? Lil Wayne? Jay-Z? More people might be able to name an Eminem or Jay-Z song, but we've already had that discussion in this thread.

It's cool that for like the hundredth time you've misconstrued someone's words or just failed to comprehend simplicity in this thread. I said among our demographic they were the most popular band. I didn't say the best or most highly respected (which may be true). People aren't calling you an idiot for your opinions, but for how you're presenting them.

Also, please don't make someone post actual Muse lyrics.

It's four pages long because people troll with posts like these, then I needlessly respond to them while neither of us contribute to the thread.

I love radiohead, but I think why you have said you hate them is fine, and most of the arguments from people who love them are terrible

Hard to call Radiohead exciting. RH is a great band, but they sound an awful like Pink Floyd. Who does Pink Floyd sound like, though? Early stuff, Beatles for sure but from there, they fused the blues and emo thing like no one else I've heard.

RH sounds a lot like Floyd just like Cheap Trick sounds a lot like The Beatles. Cheap Trick and Radiohead - 2 great bands no doubt - but just too heavily influenced by one artist for me. Clearly, others disagree.

The White Stripes pretty much ripped off The Flat Duo Jets and took it too another level. Influnces are ok, but these bands don't sound different enough from their predecessors for me.

Did they offer any alternatives as to who the best band of our time is?

guitarists I would list above White (easily):

John Frusciante: Pretty self explanitory. I mean the sick funk he was playing in the late 80's was cool. He had a way of mixing stuff together: Jazz, funk, tradition alternative rock, metal, etc... But what I like most are his melodic chords.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn88p4vAwHk A bit NSFW (f word and a half of a scrotum)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-oKRJyunz0

The funny part about RHCP is they got prolly the sickest bass player of "our time" as well.

Kirk Hammett: dosnt have the range of Frusciante, but possibly is a more skilled guitarist. I am not really a heavy metal guy (at all), but I love the metal stuff of old school metalica.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbUJilAbPQA

Orion is prolly most underrated metallica song in general. But the guitar work really makes this song. Amazing where the song goes at 3:58. As if Kirk Hammett has a canvas and is doing whatever the eff he wants.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4nCy5CITc8

My favorite old school song. Love the main riff. So classic. Four Horsemen is so badass.
love the guitar @ 3:24 - 4:35.

I could list 10 more songs. Each with an exceptional original melody, solo, style, whatever. Most guitarists would be lucky to have one or two songs. Those gems that they will be remembered by. Kirk, realistically, is prolly the #1 guitarest of "our time", even though he is a bit b4 my time.

not so easily:

Cobain: now, I am not saying this guy is 100% better, but part of White's awesomeness is his he original. Kurt Cobain was very original. I hate grunge for the most part, but he squeezed some sick stuff out and I love it. The solo in In Bloom is great. I hate his live performances though, so I would look at studio tracks. Maybe he was too high, or maybe he juust liked to take grunge to the extreme (to far for my taste).

And I might get loled at for this, but John Mayer is an excellent guitar player. Though not very original. I think his much more skilled in terms of playing than White. I like this vid of him horsing around: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlMKFTEBx84

Though I prefer his rich clean style over this solo.

And I am trying to be as objective as I can here. I have prolly 4-10 other modern(ish) guitarists I prefer over White. But, I try my hardest not to penalize White for not playing to my preference.
