Maybe I should have said School Shooters are afforded the sympathy of being "misguided, bullied, abused, lashing out towards society because they don't fit in" whereas urban minority kids who grow up misguided, bullied, abused and lash out toward society automatically get the thug/trash label without any of the same logic applied to why this person behaves the way they do.
Who we identify with on a surface level certainly skews the stance we take on issues like this. Much like chillrob alluded to.
