Anyway I have got a place in a residential detox clinic, thanks to the advice of the more supportive members. Drinking over a litre of vodka a day does make things a little hard. I do like a bit of virulent personal abuse, as long as you don’t ban me again.

Not an alcoholic (as far as I know) but wanting to do a 30 day detox to help my wife do the same. I know I have some things coming up that will make it difficult, e.g. golf, but I would like to try and get it done. I've tried a few times to do something like this and I usually crumble once a social event comes around. I'm aware that not many good things happen when I drink and I've recognised it in the past when I've not been drinking at events and see it in other people. I'd like to just get it to the point where I only drink by a pool in the sun or something on holiday.

These two sure sound like they know what they are talking about...

Maybe start by going to some AA speaker meetings, where you can sit anonymously in the audience and not worry about being called upon. Plus there are are lots of experts on alcohol addiction at AA meetings - and they won't charge you a dime for their advice should you ask for it. You don't have to live this way, Rebhelp. And you don't have to die this way.

The sooner you start listening and stop talking about yourself all the time, the better off your entire life will be. But for the sake of the thread stop talking about your exploits in here.

Good luck with getting sober and becoming something, hope you can find it within yourself.

Good for you. Having healthy people around you is a major key to success in my humble opinion

I would think I’m pretty moderate at the moment, probably drink 2 days a week and never alone at home etc. I’m just wondering how much more I can achieve if I avoid the big sessions with the boys at the weekend, especially as I should be playing poker when my friends are on their weekends.

Slight problem, the clinic that I have booked required payment before they can confirm my admission but because the amount is above the allowable amount for phone banking I have to use internet banking, and my card reader has broken.
For those who are critical of my posting please note that I am drinking a litre plus of vodka a day, I am desperate to get off the poison.

We already realized this. The issue is that you used it as an excuse for bad posting and pulled the classic, "well if you're being mean to me, then you're part of the problem."

It's hard to be sympathetic when you make know-it-all sounding, borderline braggadocios posts. It's clear that you want to honestly take ownership of your problem, but you're putting up some strong mental resistance against this due to how you wish to be perceived.

Fair point , as I said before alcoholics are good at deceiving themselves.

We were also very supportive of Barry, who has a good chance of being voted the world’s most boring man.

Managed to get my admission to the detox clinic booked for Tuesday, because of the COVID situation I will have to spend the first two days isolating in my room until they have got two negative tests back from the lab.
Not exactly looking forward to it, but needs must.

I would hope so, giving up the booze sober seems to be a bit of a push

Hi folks, I'm going to ask that if you have a problem with something someone posts in this thread, please write them directly. Or honestly, don't, but please let's not have rancor in this thread. It's not that difficult to read a post and then just move on if you're not digging it. The nature of recovery is that we're going to encounter people with legitimate psychological issues and great difficulty functioning and communicating normally. For me, treating people with tolerance and kindness - especially if I disagree with them or just simply don't like them - is a pretty key practice in my sobriety.

But either way, I'm just going to remove any such posts. Thanks.

Thank you, I completely understand your point. I hope that I will still be allowed to post in this thread while I am going though detox in solitary confinement.

i think what you’re not catching is that you are us. at least to me personally, it’s made me smirk reading your posts knowing how similar of a mindset i had this time last year. it was the buildup to finally admitting who i was, and who i wasn’t.

if i was annoyed at all with your posts it wasn’t being annoyed with you, it was bc it was reminding me who i am.

the perspective you’re going to find in rehab is going to throw you a bit, looking forward to hearing back from you.

I am going to have “That talk” with the doc in the morning “Look mate,I know that I am stupid, but I am also very intelligent, please don’t explain things to me in a simplistic manner “

What's the point of doing this?

Yes, we all were/are. It is our crutch, the only thing that we think brings us comfort and normalcy. Yet we know deep down how much trouble it has caused and that it is a very large net negative in our life.

He's a medically qualified doctor with years of experience under his belt.

You are an alcoholic with a grandiose opinion of yourself.

This is quite true , I don’t mean that I think that I have superior knowledge than the Dr I just mean that he doesn’t need to explain things to me very slowly
and simply at one word per second, which I would find annoying. .
