Hello OOT

I want to make a discussion thread about my favorite spirit: rum. A relationship which began as a hot affair drinking Morgan shots in a forest cabin for 3 days straight, have since matured into a passion for rum.

Recently I've began really getting into rum, reading a lot about it, the production of it and the influences of different regions etc., and, of course, drinking this delicious liquor.

Today I received the two newest bottles for the collection (pic at the bottom I can't make tapatalk work).

I've had a little glass of each and they're really good. I've tasted the 23 Quorhom and own the 12 year El Dorado so I will try to compare them to those. They're all sweet and quite easy to drink.

The 30 Quorhom is really delicious and full in taste, it's similar to the 23 but the drinking experience is much more powerful. I liked the 23 and the 30 is better, which says more about how good the 30 is than anything.

The difference in the El Dorados lie more in the taste, they're more similar in power and fullness. I like them both a lot, it's quality products, the 12 is probably one of the best value for money Rums there is.

I think there's a bigger increase in quality in the Quorhum rum which imo is better in every aspect than its cheaper equivalent, whereas the two El Dorados are closer.

I just realized the adage is: "drinking rum before noon makes you a pirate, not an alcoholic."

That makes way more sense.

While honeymooning in Jamaica a decade (nearly) ago, we discovered Appleton Estate. The VO is very tasty, easy sipping, or as a float on a cheaper daiquiri, or my favorite, the Miami Vice (strawberry daiquiri and pina coloda half n half with a float of dark rum)

And we drank plenty before noon.

Discovered fine rum while deployed to Kosovo, as the French and Norwegians were really into it. Before then, rum had just been a mixer for me, but now I have a collection of sipping rums.

Favorite sweet rums: Zaya and Old Monk. Zaya is a solera style rum from Trinidad, IIRC. It should always be drunk neat, imo. Old Monk is a spiced rum from India, and its way better than you'd expect. Profile is almost butterscotch, and it goes great on ice cream.

Favorite for mixing, Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva. A Cuban-style rum that is much easier to get than Havana Club.

If you like rum, or want to learn more about it. I highly recommend Capn Jimbo's Rum Project.

I checked out the website and read a bit, seems like a great read, will definitely look more closely at it when I got time.

I noticed the title was updated:

Got into run when living in Mexico for a bit after Black Friday. Back home, everyone was still into whiskey, so I switched back. Then over the last couple of years after I stopped frequent drinking of any kind of real alcohol, most of my friends moved to rum..

Went to the Bayou Distillery in Louisiana last Thanksgiving and got a couple of their Reserve bottles to take home. Surprisingly, they were a huge hit and everyone was bummed when I told him I couldn’t bring them any on my latest trip because I flew carry-on only. Best thing about that distillery is that tours are free and you get 3 free samples in the end.

Being a pirate and an alcoholic are not mutually exclusive. Maybe it would even make you a better priate.

I prefer dark rum, anejo please. Not so much in a drink; just a small glass, sip on it like brandy.

A couple years ago I got some Cuban rum because I was in Buenos Aires and figuring (lolUSA#1) that was my chance. Really good, but I can't remember the brand. Threw back a bottle on a cruise to Antarctica.

From Costa Rica, I got some Centeraio which I quite liked.

In Venezuela I bought some Santa Teresa which is pretty good.

I don't drink liquor much, and when I do, it's just sipping on a little. For example, I got the Gran Teresa in 1998, there's probably 20% left. I should work on that.

OP,

What's your expert opinion on the pairing of rum & coke?

One of my favorite "simple" drinks. There used to be a bar in town which would have 1 hour of rum & coke for 1-2$ every weekend. I drank as many as I could, and it was delicious every time.

Rum & coke is my go-to drink if I have a "basic" rum like Cap Morgan (with a bit of lime, if I got any), it's also easier to drink 4 or 5 of them them than 4-5 dark n stormy imo (which is another one of my simple favorites). I need to expand my rum-cocktail making though.

Yes I prefer Appleton but if not Mount Gay (which should shock most of you that know your rums as you would think being an Aussie I would drink Bundaberg Rum but I've moved on a long time from that rum and realised that it is way too harsh compared to Caribbean rums).

Actually on Appleton and having the benefit of being part of a spirit tasting with the distributor that brought Appleton into Australia (having worked at a bottle shop), I was able to have a sample of the Appleton 8yr old and 12 yr old and actually have to say I enjoyed the 8yr old more.

when i lived in Ecuador, I was a huge fan of Ron Miguel, this was decades ago but the silver for mixed drinks was like $2-$3 bucks a bottle or you could splurge like $7 on the primo gold stuff

have no idea what it would cost these days but if you ever see it, pick up a bottle for yourself

https://www.rumratings.com/brands/1694-san-miguel-gold

one of most interesting distillery tours I'd ever been on was of theres as they immediately asked me if I was an american and then went on this super long spiel about how unfair it was that they faced export controls to america to protect captain morgan and ron bacardi, they then gave me tons of samples, didn't care that it was a group of kids all around 14 years old

will always have fond memories of that brand and am deeply nostalgic for it

Ti Punch: Approx. equal parts lime juice, simple syrup, and rum. Adjust to taste. Yum!

Wife and I drink Mount Gay pretty regularly.

I haven't found a cheaper, cleaner tasting rum.

Cruzan dark is all you really need to know about rum. When I moved to the islands in '01 you could get it for $4.99 a handle at the West Indian version of Costco.

Sounds delicious! Gonna have a day of enjoying rum and drinks next week with a friend of mine, so I will try to make this one (assuming I can find lime juice in a Danish supermarket).

I ordered a bottle of Doorly's 5 y/o gold rum today. I'm trying to get my hands on as many Rums as I can to try some different ones, and naturally the cheaper ones are easier on the wallet.
I have a bottle of Plantation Original Dark Double Aged, and I think it's very good for the price. It's not that it tastes a lot better than it should at the cost, it just tastes like a solid product, and very "dark" fruity and naturally sweet.

Got the Doorly's 5 today and had a small glass..

It's a decent basic taste, nothing out of the ordinary with a classic caramel-y note. It's a good budget "standard" rum, it tastes good, and in a way similar to something like captain Morgan, more enjoyable to drink straight, more clear and strong flavor and less alcohol-taste.

Doesn't blow my mind, but it gets the job done and it does taste good at a cheap price. Is fine to drink straight, though I think there are other Rums with better taste at a similar price. Specifically thinking of the Abuelo 7 anejo reservo superior which costs just $3-4 more, has more spice and sweetness and nuances in taste (and is very, very delicious for something so cheap).
Doorly's 5 is a solid budget rum, I imagine it will do well in cocktails as well.
