scuzzlebutt- thanks
hmm, sometimes i just can tell it's finished and it feels obvious. when it's at a point i really like it and feel like if i tried anything else to it i'd ruin it. i don't know how to explain it, but i guess i go for a balance of some sort. but there are other times when it seems ok like it could be finished, but might not feel quite right and i have to keep working on it at the risk of ruining what i do have, or it won't feel right otherwise if i'm not really happy with it.
i had an example of that tonight actually..
the other day i made this one:
and i was really happy with the colors , but the more i looked at it the more it didn't feel right. but i kept going back and forth as to whether or not it was done. and i guess it bothered me enough that i decided to work on it more even though i knew i was going to ruin what i did have.
this is where it's at now after working on it more tonight
(photo taken without a flash, so it's more blurry and not the best quality to compare...)
so it obviously changed a lot and some people will prefer it where it was, but to me it just was lacking some sort of balance, and i think i achieved what i was going for now and am much happier with it. i might have to work on it a bit more, but overall it feels more complete to me now.
i started messing around w/ oil paints back in 2004 i think... but only painting here & there. pretty sure this was my first:
and then the next one i painted was some really bad flower that i garbaged. sometimes i think with painting it's like a hit or miss for me. like sometimes i just don't know how to paint at all, and other times it flows really easily.
i just started with the abstracts w/ acrylics the end of last year. and since i started doing abstracts, i've been painting a lot more! was harder to get myself in the mood to paint doing realism even though i'm probably better at that. it just takes a lot longer and harder to come up with things to paint. i'm sure i will still go back to realism w/ oils at some point though. i kinda believe that a lot of realism is patience more than talent though, since you basically just work on something until it matches what you're trying to copy.
i usually end up having more than one painting at a time. because sometimes i paint one and am not happy with where it's at and would rather start fresh on something new and go back to the other one later. but in general i like to focus on one at a time, just doesn't always work out that way depending on how things go. also sometimes i like to work in layers n stuff where i need to let it dry before going back to work on it, so it can help to have more than one at a time.
