i thought id prefer not titling anything, but i decided it helps make a connection to the painting for me in some way, and also easier to identify by giving them titles. otherwise i would prefer to leave it untitled and let the viewer get from it what they want.

i figure whatever meaning i take from something (if there is one) when i look at it is going to be completely different than what someone else is going to get from it. for the most part what i get out of looking at a painting comes more when i experience it as a viewer and not as the artist. cuz when i'm painting i just paint.

to me someone is either going to like looking at something or they're not, basically. i don't need to attach more meaning to it than that. with abstracts it is my way to be somewhat expressive, but also just because i love to paint and play with colors and make things that are nice to look at.

as far as actually naming them, most of them are related some way to the music i was listening to at the time, or feelings i get out of the music... but also see things in the painting that make me title them that way. it helps me remember the experience of painting it kind of.
for example...
"good feeling" i painted while listening to the violent femmes , i said before when i look at that one i kind of have this feeling of a soul trying to hold on and not slip into the darkness, trying to hang onto the good feeling... when i look at it i hear the song in my head.
"light that never goes out" while listening to the smiths, theres a "light" coming from the center of the painting and i get kind of a gloomy feeling like i would when listening to the song
"modern world" while listening to the modern lovers and i see a city skyline in it, plus it does look like a modern style painting, so i think that's why i went with something like that for the title.
"all i hear is your heart" while listening to neko case... i started to see the "heart" jumping out in the painting and went along with some things i was feeling while painting.
"escape" i just named that because it reminds me of some horizon i am looking out into but can't quite see clearly and feelings of wanting to escape but can't.
"into the fountain" another one while listening to neko case, so just named it w/ some of her lyrics that i felt applied in my own way... it's blue and watery like a fountain and makes me think of some of the feelings in that song.
"desire" i think of joanna newsom singing that word in sawdust & diamonds and the feeling of desire and love and eternity etc.

blah blah.

you even answered a question that i was too tipsy to ask; which was wheter or not you contemplated not titling them.

i don't title any of my work because of this. i dont want any outside factors to affect the viewer's experience, but i can totally understand those who do. my stuff is more minimalist and geometric though, so titles would probably seem out of place on them.

i never would have guessed that the titles were that influenced by music because the titles for 'escape 1&2', 'forgotten dream', 'desire' and 'all i hear is your heart' seem rather fitting.

hi svg,
no , i never finished it never worked on it since posting that WIP photo on facebook.

i don't know why but the last few realism paintings i started i couldn't finish and haven't been in the right mood for them. now that i started experimenting w/ abstracts, i'm enjoying painting a lot more now just because there's less pressure on myself to make it match something else and look "right" ... with abstracts i can just paint what i feel like painting and try to make something look pretty without it matching something else. and i'm able to be more creative and expressive which is something i really need right now.
but i will probably get back into realism again at some point , since i do like both styles. having a lot of fun w/ the abstracts tho. it's really helped to get me painting more. too bad i ran out of supplies or i'd be painting right now !

One day, this item will be priceless. Words cannot explain to you how awesome this painting is. Even a picture only hints at its brilliance.

Re: pretty paintings and pooptoad

I generally hate abstract art. It looks like nothing and seems like something I could paint if I were blindfolded. But then I saw this thread, and wow. Now, I only hate abstract art not made by gorie.

Still, pooptoad is probably my favorite. I like it when you have to take a second look at something because it's not actually what you think at first.

thanks ! i never use to be a fan of most abstract art either really. but i think i gained a new appreciation for it recently. sometimes it really isn't as easy as it looks. anyway, i like to think i am good at what i do, so it's nice hearing the positive feedback !
