Anyone here ever spent a significant amount of time in Dallas? If so please tell me if you liked/hated it along with the pros/cons of living there. Also recommendations on where to live would be greatly appreciated.

It's been 8 years since I lived there, but I enjoyed Dallas and wouldn't mind going back. It's a relatively vibrant city with pretty much everything you could want in a city. It's also got a pretty active night life and restaurant scene. It also has a relatively low cost of living. The one drawback is the heat. Have you ever lived in a hot climate before? Some people just can't take it. When I say hot, I mean surface of the sun hot. It's not unusual to be 100 or damn near it almost every day of the summer.

As for where to live, what is your situation? How much are you looking to spend? rent or buy? suburbs or city? gay or straight? any considerations along those lines?

The heat doesn't matter, it's the humidity that does.

The humidity in Dallas isn't that bad. I moved to Dallas from Houston. Dallas is paradise compared to Houston. People in the Chicago-TR thread are talking about how humid Chicago is. They have no idea.

There are some really cool areas designed with young people in mind that are being built/already done somewhat. I only visited my gf's friend there with her once, but it all seemed really trendy and reminded me of a fairly upscale college environment with people drinking poolside on summer weeknights and bars and seemingly cool restaurants nearby. I have no idea how old you are, but if this appeals to you I can ask my gf what area that was, she's from Plano/Dallas.

How is the job market in the DFW area at the moment?

Beat: there are Cowboys fans down there.

I had a layover there once, about an hr, it was miserable.

About as good as anywhere in the US I'd think.

OP, we really need more information to answer all of this. I've lived in Dallas my entire life, but without knowing your age/job situation/etc. It's pretty tough to answer.

I grew up in Arlington just outside of Dallas and could not wait to get out of there and move down to Austin where I live now. I go to Dallas 3-4 times a month on business and can probably answer most of your questions.

The local mass transit DART is being built up around town, and many cool areas have sprouted up around them. Young and single? Uptown is the place to be. Family and kids? Plano, Frisco or Arlington.

Pros: Hot Women, Tex Mex and BBQ
Cons: Rednecks, shiny shirt wearing $30k millionaires, hot in the summer, no legal poker

No legal poker in Dallas, but Winstar is about an hour up I35 in Oklahoma and Shreveport is only like 3 hours away.

I live in Ft. Worth. Pretty good city to live in. Low cost of living, this part of the country is much less impacted by the recession than others. Lots of young people in the right areas.

It is hot in the summer. Like you just don't go outside some days hot.

Sorry was out of town. I'm a 30yr old freelance web developer that works from home. My gf got a job at the hospital in Corsicana but we are told we should live in Dallas. I looked at living in Corsicana and that was no bueno. A friend of mine recommended the Deep Ellum area but he was only visiting. We are moving from Vegas so heat is not a problem but the humidity I'm sure will take some getting use to. Thanks all for replying to this post.

Corsicana is like 60 miles south of Dallas. And 75 miles south of anywhere nice in Dallas(North Dallas is much much nicer). That's one heck of a commute for your girl, and would be driving through pretty crappy traffic at fairly large portions of the day. Not that this is the nicest area ever, but maybe they have something in Waxahachie? I've never spent any kind of reasonable time in Corsicana, but it can't be THAT bad of a place to live. Real Estate in Dallas is so cheap that almost any city has reasonable places to live.

I don't even consider Deep Ellumto be a place to live. It's kind of like a bar district, and has some random lofts/old apartment buildings. It's definitely not what it was 10-20 years ago, and definitely not the safest place ever.

If you are going to raise a family, I'd look at Plano/Frisco/Allen/McKinney/Sachse, but these are like 75-90 miles from Corsicana.

If you want to live in a cool place, I'd go Addison/Uptown, but they don't really have houses in those cities, just apartments.

Bleh, this is kind of a misleading statistic because of the fact that Dallas has so many suburbs, and that's where all the nice houses are.

Houston has the same problem.

I just wanted to second what ZBT said. I don't even really consider Corsicana to be part of the Dallas area. Addison is really nice, but do not underestimate how much the traffic sucks in the DFW area. Let me repeat that, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE how much the TRAFFIC SUCKS in the DFW area. You do not want anybody but your worst enemy traveling up and down Dallas highways, especially for more than a few miles. To live anywhere nice in Dallas and work in Corsicana would mean that she would have to fight the I-35/I-45 cluster**** around downtown Dallas everyday (twice). Your girlfriend may be very nice and all, but I guarantee you she will be a total bitch after having to do that everyday. Also, it will be 60-75 miles, but it will take 90-120 minutes each way with traffic.

Like ZBT said, Corsicana might not be that nice but there has to be some place there that is reasonably nice to live. I just don't see how living in Dallas is anything like a reasonable solution to your situation.

Yeah, and the vast majority of crime is concentrated in the south of Dallas. W's new neighborhood is quite safe, I assure you.

Yeah, aboslutely ****ing forget about living in Dallas. You can go there on the occasional Saturday / Sunday if you want to have fun. The only options you should seriously consider are:

1) Live in Corsicana
2) Break up with girlfriend

also, where do you live now??

Heh ****! I live in Las Vegas now... the traffic is bad but something tells me not near as bad as Dallas.

I have family near Plano and they like it a bit. They moved from Ohio and I think they really like the change of pace.

They have an outdoor kitchen and a lot of other cool stuff too.
