I’ve seen this argument in many threads how poker adds nothing back to society and then people rebuttal with how other jobs also don’t add anything back to society and everyone’s replaceable etc.

Instead of falling back into playing more poker by rationalizing everything else is also a waste of time… what are some ideas of doing something fulfilling with your life that will leave a lasting legacy ?

Have a few kids, do some local charity, and simply spray graffity all over your home-town, and then repeat the process in an other city...

You're already going it about it the wrong way if you think what you do for a living defines your life, or is how you leave a lasting legacy.

My immediate thought was that becoming a vicar might be a good job. Usually they get a free house, and a lot of free time; they have only a few people dependent upon them, and enough money to get by on; there is little hassle from bosses and everyone is pleasant to them.

So I did a quick Google and found https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26671221. Looking at the list at the bottom of the page, it appears that those who have given vicaring a quick whirl actually believe they couldn't be in a more satisfying job if you paid them - which is nice.

A lack of self fulfillment is akin to someone having to constantly experience gratification in order to be at peace... Self gratification is about as embarrassing as being caught masterbating in public.

Then again, you just might be hooked on endorphins... action junky.

Feeling fulfilled for me is like craving the really boring parts in movies... the quite exposition, the slow scenic tracking shots and the slow deliberate character study the lives between the mind numbing action set pieces and visual eye trickery... where life exists, where time slows down and where I choose to feel... fulfilled

So I would argue fulfillment and gratification are two separate things.

But your post got me thinking so there’s that.

Tommy Angelo had a good take. If you think your job must contribute to society, then poker isn't the right job for you.

Other jobs available to me obstruct me from fulfillment. For example, if i have to wake up early every morning i'll be tired all the time. I'll have little free time and little extra money, as I am not qualified for any good job and live in the US. So little to no time off, hc etc.

I have been a wage slave and everything else in life whithered away. Since becoming a gambler, i've returned to playing music and reading, taken up meditation etc. I am able to donate money to charity.

If opportunities remain for a few more years, I'll make enough to retire early. My charitable contributions are limited now, because gambling might dry up at any time. However, ideally, ill get the retirement money and then work an additional year entirely for charity. (Hopefully this will not trigger an audit.)

I highly doubt that gambling opportunities will still be worth very much at this point. This is already a dream scenario. But if things are still good 5-6 years from now, I'll continue generating cash, giving most away, as that would be more efficient than volunteering.

If gambling dries up but I can retire or semi retire, I will hopefully still have some time and energy i can put to a good purpose.

In the mean time, if you can employ people, even for odd jobs, and pay them really well, that's quite fulfilling. If you play live, you can tip better than most regs. Maybe get a massage if you notice the masseuse is having a slow day. Similar with cocktail waitress, etc.
