Phantom Menace in 3-D in 2012...why?! Phantom Menace in 3-D in 2012...why?!

So today Lucas announces he is releasing Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 3-D in 2012.

Is there a single reason to go see this movie if you're above the age of eight?

We know the movie is beyond terrible. We know 3-D in general is dumb, and 3-D on movies that weren't shot in 3-D is almost as bad as Phantom Menace. Why would anyone want to see this?

Is *this* the thing that causes the Mayan calendar to end and doom us all?

Can't we just shoot anyone who goes and sees this thing for $15-$20 a ticket and consider it an effective means of culling the population?

There's always a chance he might edit Jar-Jar out of it

Lucas still thinks it is good.

also Attack of the Clones is much worse than Phantom Menace, even counting the Jar-Jar factor

Let's be honest - many of us will go see it.

Why? Because $20 isn't very much money and there's the chance that it'll be cool. Plus, even if it sucks - $20 isn't very much to spend to make fun of it.

Edit: Hell, it'll still be a better story than Avatar and that was worth seeing in 3D.

Im definitely going to see all the SWs and im not even a big fan of the SW franchise.

Id probably pay the cover cost just to watch the pod race and the Maul fight in 3D, Lucas can edit the rest out if he really wants.

Attack of the Clones with the huge CGI ending and the Yoda fight will be great.

Sith is the one i look forward to, im a HUGE fan of the opening sequence and its gonna be crazy in 3D. PEOPLE WILL PUKE!!! The two sabre fights at the end are gonna look good and i assume Lucas will add a bunch more fine detail in the Order 66 scenes.

The true test is gonna be the old films. I have zero clue how Lucas will pull it off to make it worth seeing, though i guess the conversion methods is going to be massively improved in 4 years (assuming its 1 release per year) and the external space shots should be great.

Is this the OOT viewpoint, by the way? I hate to make Dids look right, but I'm going to disagree again. 3-D is A) the way of the future, and B) awesome. It sucked when it was like, a baseball comes out towards you and thats it. But when its the whole movie, its amazing.

Hayden Christiansen's acting was bad, but don't blame him TOO much for being saddled with some of the worst scriptwriting in the history of film

George Lucas will not be satisfied until he has machine-gunned, set fire to, pissed on, taken a dump on, then set fire to again, everyone's fond memories of Star Wars 4-6.

I don't think it's the OOT viewpoint. I remember the Avatar thread had a big disagreement about the plot of the movie (because some ******s thought that it was good) - but I think almost everyone agreed it was enjoyable to watch and the 3D experience was pretty awesome.

I don't get it. It must be a joke, but it isn't funny. Huh?

Just in case some you have been living in a hole:

He also has something to say about Avatar and how 3-D is taking the medium in the wrong direction.

It pays pretty well, if you're George Lucas.

I don't know about OOT viewpoint, but most moviegoers I know agree with it. In the theaters, it can be decent when handled well. Movies that are shot for 3D can be enjoyable. But most movies so far, the 3D has been tacked on at the last second just to pump ticket prices (Clash of the Titans anyone?). Beyond theatrical release, though, I don't know anyone who wants to sit at home with those stupid glasses on. If you honestly believe 3D is the way of the future, you've been reading hollywood press releases too much, I think.

And I will second these reviews. Fantastic analysis of the Star Wars and Star Trek movie failures. He both made me appreciate Star Wars and Empire even more, and hate the prequels even more.

And no, I will not see these. But it is as much a function of the fact that I never go to theaters any longer as much as how little interest I have in watching the prequels in 3D.

I asked why anyone would bother to actually pay the money to see these. I can't come up with a single good reason an adult would do so.

I would be down for the REAL 3 SW in 3D + digital enhancement and all that.

But **** if I will give a dime to see those piece of **** prequels again.

3D that actually adds to the presentation would be awesome, but I've yet to see anything (did not see Avatar in 3D) where it was anything but a gimmick that involved me wearing uncomfortable glasses over my glasses.

Of all the people to start this thread, I'm surprised it's the guy who makes a living working in a medium that churns out far more crap than good and sells it to a devoted audience that is going to pick up whatever ****** X-mini they pump our regardless of quality. More than anybody else I'd think you'd be attuned to the mentality (not saying you have it yourself) of the people that would go see this.

I think 3D sucks, to this point. I thought Avatar actually kind of sucked visually. Blurry, gave me a headache, etc.

Beyond that, though, it's just one more neato tool to distract filmmakers from the job of actually telling a compelling story well. The special effects in SW, still great though they are, are not the reason the movie is considered a classic and is still loved by everyone. It's because the characters and story are great.
