My nephew had to wear one of these for a while and it was NBD. He didn't seem to mind it at all and he's perfectly fine now. I'd say go for it

Teeth and braces are a totally different issue.

Teeth are very noticeable, they arent covered up by hair, etc. There are certainly some kids who get braces who dont necessarily need them, but their teeth end up better.

It seems dumb to go through all this trouble for something that 90% of people wouldnt have noticed when looking at a normal picture of LFS's kid

The flat head isn't just from sleeping on his back. In fact, doctors recommend ONLY allowing a newborn to sleep on their backs for the first six months or so. With no pillows or props in the crib, for their own safety.

The problem comes from a lack of daily tummy time. Make sure he's on his stomach several times daily.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't do it if the insurance will cover it. Is there any downside except your vain embarrassment over having a kid in a helmet for 3 months?

i have a pretty weird shaped head, it's also from when i was a baby but for different reasons, i don't fully understand the details. my parents had the option of correcting it - through surgery - and decided against it. i think my dad just didn't trust doctors and was scared i'd get brain damage or something.

since then i've met people whose parents went through with the corrective surgery, with great results. i'm stuck being self-conscious about something most people never even consider when thinking about their own appearance.

i understand why my parents made the decision they did but i really, REALLY wish they'd gone the other way. given that your kid's head can be "fixed" so quickly and easily, i would definitely encourage you to go through with it, even if its not covered by insurance.

You're confusing real doctors with the scammers on TV. I am very surprised at how many people in this forum distrust the advice, in spite of the fact that this is fairly common. None of you have kids?

Just an aside here. Until fairly recently the "expert opinion" was that babies should sleep on their stomach. One of the reasons was to avoid a flat head.

Which is why the revised majority opinion is that babies should sleep on their backs for their safety, but spend plenty of time on their stomachs while awake.

The only reason you're thinking about this is because somebody seems to have convinced you that "babies heads should be this kind of shape". They only reasons I can see for them making such statements are (1) superficial and (2) profit-motivated.


Invest the $3,600 in the market for him. When he's 16, take it out and buy him a nice (used) car instead.

As somebody who had a shaved head for 10+ years, I can tell you having a decently shaped head will allow your son maximum freedom in hairstyle. You just can't rock it super short with a mis-shaped noggin imo

This is crazy. That kid's head is 100% normal. Making it more rounded might actually make it look worse instead of better. I can't believe so many people are in favor of the ******ed helmet.

There's also the chance that Jack finds out what you did and slaps you when he gets older for you being so ******ed.

This. 20-30 years ago no one even thought of these helmets, and yet i haven't noticed anyone on the streets with an unusual flat head...

20-30 years ago, babies slept on their stomachs. then sleeping on their stomachs was correlated with SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), and they started telling parents to have babies only sleep on their backs.

As a parent of a child who had a helmet, if insurance covers this, there is zero downside to getting one of these. Particularly if you don't have to go throught the plaster fitting thing.

Everyone keeps saying there's zero downside, but isn't there a chance that it could be traumatic for the kid to have his head enclosed in a piece of plastic for 3 months?

Can a baby suffer long lasting psychological trauma?
