If they don't attend class? I'd say no.

Thanks everyone for the advice/help (and to my surprise only 1 judgemental *******.) Finally got it out yesterday by leaving a note for the other tenants (most of which are not from the U.S. so mail may work slightly differently in their country) explaining that mail left half hanging out of a mailbox is generally intended as outgoing mail. Even though I know their actions were well-intentioned, it was just very frustrating to go through the same thing over and over again.

It's getting warm in here and there's an unpleasant smell that's like a cross between chili and locker room.

Exam is 1 hour and 40 minutes, and we're about 30 minutes in.

In a gesture of collegiality, I'm going to be nice to you starting....NOW, and continuing for one whole, long, week.

I hope you have a nice weekend.

Spidercrab can you post a couple of the questions?
***People seem to talk about the December LC Thread earlier and earlier every year*** Quote

I'll just say they're finance/accounting/financial statement type questions. Like, I could have asked a question like, "XYZ firm issued $100,000,000 of 8% bonds on 1/1/2018. The bond specifies semiannual coupon payments on June 30 and December 31 each year. If the market rate of interest for similar bonds is 11% on January 1, 2022, how much will those bonds trade for on the open market?"

In this exam, all of the questions are multiple choice. Which means I had to think of the different types of errors that students were likely to make and have all of those error-driven answers available as options.

Spider,

What would be an example of a question that someone who never went to class would have no idea what the answer is or how to get the answer?

What do you mean by he "has a right?" Do you believe he has a right to say whatever he wants on a privately owned internet forum free of restriction from the owners or their proxies (i.e. mods)?

What do you mean by his right to be a dickhead, "here or otherwise?" If thinman worked at your firm and asked a colleague to show him her tits, is that his right? What if he wrote that comment to a client or opposing counsel in an electronic communication?

It is ripe in here. There is at least one student here who has gone multiple days without showering.

My big question right now is if the exam is too long. I have a hard time judging how long the exam will take, so I typically make sure that I can finish the exam (writing out the solution to each problem) in about 1/3 the time that I give students. My general assessment is that if the first student finishes with about 20% of time left, then I did ok. That milestone would be 20 minutes left in this case. Right now there are 33 minutes left, so we'll see how good a job I did in estimating.

(Normally I have a couple of beers before I take the exam, in order to handicap myself. For the final exam, I didn't have a chance to do that. So depending on how much that beer handicap adds, my sober attempt may be really off.)

Edit: First student turned in his exam with 28 minutes left.

Are you a full professor, adjunct, or something in between? I’ve often thought about becoming an accounting professor whenever my number comes up in my current career, but as I understand it an adjust professor’s life is a bit of a struggle.

I'm a tenured associate professor. Life is good. Life would be substantially less good as an adjunct.

Owners or their delegates have the right to ban him, permanent or otherwise. I think it’s best for forums like this for mods to have a very light touch and only ban for serious transgressions. Hurt feelings of another poster would generally not be banworthy.

I really don't know how to feel. It's pretty easy as a male to be like "just have tough skin and get over it", but I have no clue what its like to constantly have to deal with harassment of a sexual nature. It's like me as a white man telling black people "whats the big deal, just comply with the officers and you have nothing to worry about". Which to me is perfectly logical and reasonable, but I literally have no frame of reference for what its like to live in the world they live in.

I used to think women getting upset about catcalls was stupid. Its not a big deal, just ignore it, if anything you should be flattered by it. I moved in with a couple girls on the cycling team in college and we rode together almost daily. It didn't take long before I was ****ing sick of people driving by and honking their horn or sticking their head out the window to wolf howl. None of it was even directed at me but I felt dirty and gross and actually understood what it was like to just want to ****ing leave the house and ride my bike and be ignored and how impactful not getting to enjoy such a simple and basic thing is. Was pretty eye opening to me. So now whenever a group of people say they have a problem with something, even if its a problem I think is stupid and isn't a real problem. I try and take their word for it and then do my best to not perpetuate that problem.

The problem is I also hate how SJW society is now and think the pendulum has swung way too far the other way and people are genuinely being ****ing stupid about certain things. This normally doesn't matter tho because I'm not in any position where my opinions or actions have any effect. But in this case, im a mod, so I could have decided to ban thinman, but instead I don't because I personally feel like its just something that is easy to ignore, and I have no idea where it falls on the continuum of "I don't understand this, but I should do my part to stop it" and "Jesus, stop being outraged at everything". So I just choose to do nothing because I like the way things work here and don't want to mess that up. Which really is the biggest part of the problem if its something that is a big deal, the people in power are the people who don't understand the situation and are in the majority so are comfortable with the status quo.

Not really any point I guess in typing all that out, Im not actually making any kind of statement, just verbal diarrheaing my own thought process for my own sake.

I discussed this with Howard and 27 when I met them and it feels like a good time to share it with you all.

In my mind there are 2 high level categorizations I use for people who post here. There are obviously way more categorizations on a more discreet level but these 2 are exponentially more important.

1. Unhinged
2. Everyone else

Spoiler:
I had lapka as a really kind person but firmly in category 1

I've so far stayed out of this as I don't know thinman's track record.

But his comment in isolation wasn't really a "show me your tits lapka". It was more, "jeezus guys, stop kissing lapka's ass" expressed in a slightly cruder way. I understand that it was triggering to lapka, but demanding an apology on the internet is like pissing in the wind.

I hate to be on this side of a harassment debate, but I gotta push back, or it blurs the #metoo kind of events.

On a completely different topic, my 16 yo daughter gave me her Christmas list. I asked her whether I needed to divide it between me and her other Mom. She tells me she's already done it: "I gave you the makeup and the fashionable clothes, and [other Mom] get's the comfy clothes". This makes me feel stupidly smug.

Somebody has to be the biggest *******. If we keep banning them it'll eventually be you or me.

I came out to my car this evening to doscover that it had been thoroughly rifled through. Only thing I notice missing is an android charging cable and two $1 cheques.

Any idea what they might have been going for here?

several questions

why do you have $1 cheques? Or is that like a fancy way of saying casino chips?

Do you typically leave your car unlocked? Or did they actually jimmy it?
