I'm not saying Lapka's response is 100% rational, but LOLing at someone for reacting poorly to sexual harassment is pathetic, imo. And if Thinman is the biggest ******* on the site, why is that allowed?

That is a good question, but unfortunately above my pay grade to answer. He was perma'd as By-Tor yrears ago and Thinman is porobably his 4th or 5th iteration since then. He is one of many, many posters that are currently operating like this. Take babs and Dr. Dickbag for example...

I also would really like for this debate to not continue. When I saw what thinman had posted and how he followed up I banned him for a week. I'm not super-clear on mod rules these days but I guess I thought (and still think) that permabans are not something that somebody like me should be dishing out, at least not without a wider discussion, which I'm not really up for.

But for what it's worth I think I understand why she wouldn't return - not because of what thinman said, but because of how some other people reacted. I do not think most of those people have any malice in their hearts or intend any harm, I think it's a much larger cultural issue, which is why really digging it into here is an extremely bad idea.

To be fair, LFS mostly just mods his drinking thread, he isn't a "full time" mod so to speak. It isn't out of laziness.

Who would have ever thought a bunch of 40/50/60+ y/o adults need so much moderation to not catch a big sad from OOT? Busting each other's chops here seems is a prerequisite upon entry. Tissue paper feelings are at an all time high around here.

This basically where I am as well. OOT plays rough...it always has. It is also a fantastic resource for many, many other great things: advice/compassion/tough love/funnies/food/world views/etc, but it has always been a play rough kind of place.

To your second point, yah 2018 seems to have been the tissue paperest friggin year ever, but unfortunately I don't think it is peak tissue paper. I honestly blame social media as a whole because it gave a bunch of morans the ability to express their moral outrage at dumb **** that shouldn't even be a blip on the radar. Very 1984 and thought-policey to me.

Live blog: Final exam

I'm giving my final exam right now. Will keep the thread updated if anything interesting happens. There are 36 students taking the exam, 2/3 male/female split.

Only 3 people are wearing hats, which is fewer than normal. One of the hats is a baseball cap that says "I came to break hearts". One hat is an oldschool winter cap with a poof on top (these have a name, but I can't remember it). Surprisingly, it's a Buffalo Bills hat.

Right now, everyone is head down and writing, but I'm expecting that as the exam goes on I'll start to see more frustrated looks and people just gazing off into space hoping for divine intervention.

One student is visibly unhappy with the exam, making weird hand gestures. I'm pretty sure he just mouthed "wtf?". I don't recognize this student at all - very likely he never came to class.

Most visible brands are Nike, Under Armour, and Fila.

Lapka’s observation that I think thin’s conduct is within standards is half right and half wrong. I would not have written what Thin did and I think he’s rather a dick for having written it. And in that send his conduct is outside what I think is appropriate. That said, Thin presents zero threat to lapka and she can put him on ignore or ask mods to ban him. Either are totally reasonable reactions. But my view of environments like OOT is that I need to have thick skin — which is to say that I’m not ever going to get butthurt by insults thrown at me here or by things I read here I disagree with.

We’re my comments to lapka patronizing? Maybe. I certainly didn’t intend them that way, and I know for a fact that lapka and I like and respect one another. At bottom — and **** off, Fabian, if you regard this as a political comment — free expression matters more to me than feelings being hurt. So while I like and respect lapka a hundred times more than I like and respect Thinman, I still believe that Thinman has a right to be a dickhead, here or otherwise.
