I was preparing my final exam last night and I had movies playing in the background. The two that I had on back to back were
Cocktail and
Top Gun, both classics obviously. A couple of things stood out:
- Tom Cruise had a real decline in hair quality from Top Gun to Cocktail. Really wish samjjones was still around to give his take on that. The only positive thing to say about his Cocktail hair was that it demonstrated real flexibility and willingness to take risks. Of note, Val Kilmer was #10 on the Hollywood Hair Hall Of Fame, which included this fine quote about his role in Top Gun:
Quote:
As the "Iceman", Val created perhaps the greatest single hair style in modern film history. Awesome. I've been told that just looking at Val in "Top Gun" has been known to cause women to spontaneously cream their pants.
- The upgrade in love interest from Top Gun to Cocktail is remarkable. Kelly McGillis as Charlie just gets destroyed by Elisabeth Shue, who I'm confident would have been at least a semifinalist in a hypothetical 1988 Ms. OOT. What's crazy to me is that McGillis is only 2 years older than Shue, and since Top Gun came 2 years before Cocktail, it means that they were roughly the same age in their respective movies.
