golf, before JayTee answers, I'd be willing to wager with you that he's more knowledgeable about conventional medications and big pharma than you. How much do you want to bet?

So, just to test out your math here, would you rather have 10% of $400,000,000 or 0%?

Edit: Not interested in really proving what I do know (little) vs. don't know (everything).

We all die, majority between 70 and 90. Traditional medicine is much better for some conditions and can absolutely harm you too. Nobody is getting out alive anyway. It all delays the inevitable.

We should just make abortion mandatory for every preggar until there's one person left on Earth holding a wire coat hanger. They're all going to die anyway, why wait?

Ideally, people wouldn't use healthcare at all and die at 64.9 years. They don't use up Medicare or Social Security.

We are going to get crushed by Alzheimer's/Dementia. We are already spending something like 20% of Medicare on this. Which is basically keeping people alive that don't even really understand anything. It is soul-crushes family members. 53% of caregivers end up with their own severe mental issues.

I go to an Alzheimer's facility every other week. I am on the board of the place. It is the saddest disease ever.

"Over the past decade of data, the cancer incidence rate (2005-2014) was stable in women and declined by approximately 2% annually in men, while the cancer death rate (2006-2015) declined by about 1.5% annually in both men and women. The combined cancer death rate dropped continuously from 1991 to 2015 by a total of 26%, translating to approximately 2,378,600 fewer cancer deaths than would have been expected if death rates had remained at their peak."

So, despite being correct that some cancer treatments that are rushed to market may prove ineffective, trends show that people are getting cancer at the same rate now as they did years ago, (the decrease in men's incidence is probably related to decreased diagnosis of prostate cancer,) and they are living longer and dying less as a result of conventional medicine. So basically, the idea that we are doing something wrong with diet, etc and it's causing cancer rates to increase is false. And the idea that conventional medicine is no better than placebo is also false.

Stats, stats, and more damn lies.

How do you know this is all due to conventional medicine?

There are hundreds of different types of cancer. They have managed to treat a few of them better. For many others, it still is a death sentence. They consider a drug a success if it extends life 2.5 months. Yippee.

golfnutt seems to me to be the type of guy that somehow simultaneously believes conventional medicine (to be read as actual real medicine) doesn't really work that well and that big pharma companies are withholding drugs that will cure cancer because they can make more money that way.

Like this wasn't all predictable.

a) Someone posts about Homeopath.
b) Smart people say it is scam.
c) A few people say so what.
d) A couple defend Homeopath/Alternative Medicine.
e) Someone says that even conventional medicine is scam.
f) Smart people go crazy.
g) Nut job digs in deep. Questions everything thrown his way.

And away we go. Yes, this thread could have stopped at D. But you are all wrong. Sort of.

More nuanced.

Big pharma companies are not investing in R&D to cure diseases. They make money only managing diseases.

The pharma racket is more than people can comprehend. There is one drug that has gone from $5 to $300 to $1600 to $3200 to I guess $4500.

He wants to protect his own guild by criticizing all potential competitors.

It's not personal. It's just business.

I do "practice" alternative medicine -- Emotional Support Animals. Some people probably thinks it is a scam and doesn't help. I would disagree.

My main business is as 'traditional' as it gets. Insurance-based medical office. Paperwork, appeals, money, money, money, money, money, and perhaps a few people get better.

We print money for Big Pharma.

So you don't believe in any of the aspects of the business you are in, yet you continue to plug along in them to make a living? Sounds like the very definition of a scammer or a charlatan.

Thus ends my participation in the derailing of this thread. Feel free to spread this to the Containment thread if you must. But my history of responses can not be considered to be an accurate predictor of future responses.

This isn't even just harmless conspiratarding either. There was a case around here where parents were refusing 'conventional' treatment for their kid's Hodgkin's lymphoma (untreated survival odds: 5%, chemotherapy survival odds: 90%) cuz they wanted to sacrifice goats. We had a ton of ethics debates over this in my circles, and i think i fall on the patient autonomy side. Ultimately iirc the judge had the parents arrested and the kid given treatment and cured.

Maybe the goat sacrifice would have also cured him, and without the nasty side effects.

There is never a bad time to post this:

"By definition alternative medicine has either not been proved to work or been proved not to work. Do you know what they call alternative medicine that's been proved to work?"

Spoiler:
"Medicine."
