I agree if you measure the lengths they are the same. I do not agree that it is the same box rotated approximately 90 degrees.

EDIT: To answer your question, I'm saying that the lengths are the same because you CAN'T measure in that 3rd direction.

You could build boxes just like those, set them up in those same dimensions, and then take a photograph giving essentially the same picture as what we see. But if you could examine those boxes in 3D you would see that they are not anywhere near the same shape. In fact Box 2 does not even have square interior angles.

Okay so i mistyped. The OP with this picture said the boxes are the same SIZE. ok?

This is correct, the boxes are totally different size and shape. If you measure the 2D image it might measure the same, but that's like saying if you measure your thumb and then measure the wall across the room that spans your thumb's width when you hold it at arm's length and look across it, they are the same width. This is a dumb "illusion" if you can even call it that. Everything you see in an image or in real life is a 2D image hitting our eye, our mind fills in the depth even IRL based on angles and parallax from 2 eyes. Stupid argument about this one.

I am so ****ing good at stereograms. I have no idea why- since one of my eyes is so bad it can't be corrected by glasses, but I totally see the schooner always.

This makes me want to get really high and do this or just totally makes it pointless to smoke because I'm equally wierded out. Very awesome.

Okay class, today we are going to learn the definition of 'illusion'.

Re: Optical Illusions Thread

When I was younger I figured out a way to invert the stereograms so the thing that was supposed to stick out at you actually sunk into the surrounding picture. I've been trying to repeat this just now, but am not having any luck.

As far as I can remember it involved crossing my eyes slightly. I forget when I crossed my eyes. Whether it was before I had actually seen the object or after. The best one I remember doing this on was a downward spiral, so when inverted it looked like a really tall spike.

Cute. Go back to the picture of two boxes (#48) and the comments I referred to that followed. The illusion was supposed to be that the boxes look like different sizes but they were claimed to be the "exact same box" seen from two angles. That was false, you cannot turn box 1 at any angle and get it to look like box 2, and the boxes are not the same when extrapolated to 3D based on their images. So the illusion fails on every level. I was responding to a claim that the measurement of the boxes in 2D proved that they were the same box (when in fact that was also false).

BTW, there are many more kinds of illusions than just ones that fool our depth perception, such as ones that create motion where none exists, ones that appear in color where there is none, etc etc. So that is not a definition.

Are you sure it was stereograms and not just 2D pictures of 3D objects?

No you understand it perfectly. Thats the point. Our brains cannot see them as the same colour. Go to photoshop and use colour picker and you will see they are exactly the same colour.

OMG. I just put a bunch of browser windows over the other various parts of the picture so that I could only see the two cross-sections and they indeed both are the same shade of gray which is just ridiculously freaking and weird.

Another one of those where you could put a gun to my head and ask, "are those the same color or different?" and I would be a dead man.

This is actually the only way I can see them, and why I can never tell what the hell it is supposed to be. Absolutely frustrating. I see the image going inward rather than out to me. It looks like a big pit and is very much in 3d, but makes it nearly impossible to tell what you are looking at. I do cross my eyes a bit to get it that way though.

If you cross your eyes (focal point before image) you will see the invert, and if you relax (focal point after the image) you will see the intended 3d image.

Your mind will 'focus' the image both ways, when the focal point of your eyes is actually behind of in front of the image.

Please explain this MicroBob.
I'm totally lost.

Edit: Actually, I see that those words are throughout that stereogram. Are you alluding to anything more specific than that?

This one I can actually see how they are the same color a little bit. I definitely can't see it for the life of me in the cross sections one.

This is weird, the only way I can see the woman spinning is clockwise, and yet several other people say they can only see it going counterclockwise. Whoa.

If you look very carefully at the picture below, after a few seconds you will be able to see several people in the background.

My best advice for seeing it:

Click on this small image and use the larger one.
Don't look at it, look through it.
Don't look at one part, look at all of it.
Blur your eyes a little and the 3D image becomes crystal clear.

Once you're locked in, you can move your head left and right slightly and the dog moves in this 3d 'world'

Even though I've done this a hundred times, sometimes it still takes a few seconds to get into the 3D world, but you'll know once you're there.

Good luck!

Edit: They're called sterograms.

I won't say what it is, but its funny. Let's see who gets it...
The dog one is very well done, the words one not as good. The better the image the faster it pops into 3D for me, and the dog one was near instant. I spend a lot of time looking at protein structures in stereo, so I'm pretty used to it.
