This is not a level.

Drop a scale on any side on one image, and the corresponding side on the other image will be the same.

I find this one just over-the-top ******ed-freaky because if you put a gun to my head and said are these the same or different...I'm a dead man.

Surprised someone hasn't posted any of those things where it looks like a bunch of crap, but if you look 'through' the picture it becomes this 3D image within the crap.

Forget the name of them.

Mallrats had a scene in it relating to these, I think, where everyone saw it but 1 guy.

It's weird that this thread came up, I had just found an old collection of those magic eye
pictures and have been tripping my kids out with them this week. http://www.magiceye.com/3dfun/stwkdisp.shtml

This is the best one I've ever seen. The cross sections are the the same color.

Re: Optical Illusions Thread

OK found one.
Some of you guys are about to be tilted because you won't be able to do it, but inside of this pic is a little 3D doggy...

My best advice for seeing it:

Click on this small image and use the larger one.
Don't look at it, look through it.
Don't look at one part, look at all of it.
Blur your eyes a little and the 3D image becomes crystal clear.

Once you're locked in, you can move your head left and right slightly and the dog moves in this 3d 'world'

Even though I've done this a hundred times, sometimes it still takes a few seconds to get into the 3D world, but you'll know once you're there.

Good luck!

Edit: They're called sterograms.

Follow the outstretched foot with your eyes kinda in a circular motion using your whole head, as the foot gets to widest point lift your eyes very slightly and reverse the motion of your head. You'll be seeing clockwise or counter at will after a few seconds I promise.

Re: Optical Illusions Thread

Here's what they say to do:

* If you are moderately near-sighted, take your glasses off; the optimum watching distance may be then shorter than recommended above.
* Start watching the screen from very short distance, without trying to focus--just relax. While seeing a blurry image, slowly move away from the screen.
* If you can see your nose reflected from the screen (difficult on modern monitors), focus on this reflection. You may try to put a small mirror on the screen and watch your nose there. This technique depends a lot on screen resolution.
* It is probably easier for a beginner to get a 3D effect for smaller images (higher resolution); on the other hand, the 3D effect is more pronounced for larger images.

I feel ******ed, the 3d image comes natural to me and is really easy to see but I don't understand the illusion in OP at all. Squares are just different colors to me.

Re: Optical Illusions Thread

The illusion is that the squares are actually the same color, but the surrounding squares and shadow make you see them as different colors. You will need a color picker (firefox extension) or a photo editing program to verify this. Or take our word for it.

I can't believe anyone even falls for this. The lengths seem to be the same because you're measuring in 2d when there is a depth you can't account for on your screen. It's not the same picture or even the same shape.

So what you're saying is that in a 2D picture (it's flat on a computer screen, or in print where you might see this same illusion) we should measure and/or account for a 3rd dimension? The drawing doesn't go INTO the screen, of course you can't account for depth -- nor should you measure it.

Imagine the surface the boxes are sitting on. It's not even in the same plane

I agree if you measure the lengths they are the same. I do not agree that it is the same box rotated approximately 90 degrees.

EDIT: To answer your question, I'm saying that the lengths are the same because you CAN'T measure in that 3rd direction.

You could build boxes just like those, set them up in those same dimensions, and then take a photograph giving essentially the same picture as what we see. But if you could examine those boxes in 3D you would see that they are not anywhere near the same shape. In fact Box 2 does not even have square interior angles.
