It took me forever before I could see it spinning counter clockwise. Now I can switch it up whenever by looking at the feet

You have to stare at this one for a while to tell that the pictures are actually different:

Never trust a .swf that doesn't seem to move or change. Especially if someone says you need to turn on your speakers or stare at it for a long time.

If you read his tutorial you see that he inverts the colors and matches them on a 50% gray layer. I don't know anything about color mixing but this is what does it. If you stare at the 'color' version long enough even without moving your eyes it will eventually 'fade' to B&W

I can only see it going counter clockwise, and it is pissing me off. I have tried to cross my eyes, stare at the feet, hips, head, and can't get it to change direction. Its broken.

When you stare at something for a while, for some reason you get its inverse image imprinted on your eye. Maybe it's a way to dampen the signal or something to protect your eyes. Like when you stare at the sun and you get those weird purple things in your eyes.

These guys just put the inverse image of the coloring of the castle there and had you stare at so that the coloring of the castle got imprinted on your eye.

Here's another example: http://www.eyetricks.com/jesus.htm

I can't imagine how that ballerina could move in a different direction. Her leg moves from left to right at the same time as her face faces us. That's counter clockwise.

From the old thread. I could only ever see it clockwise until I saw this.

I can see them both ways almost at will now but it took a bit of practise. I ONLY saw it clockwise for about 10 minutes of solid staring until I imagined whether the outstretched leg was spinning in front of or behind the pivot leg.

After reading the other thread, and practicing, now I can only see it going clockwise...I am an emotional mess right now.

If you like this kind of thing, I highly suggest "Visual Intelligence" by Donald Hoffman

You will learn a lot about how your visual processing works (and see plenty of neat optical illusions in the process).

It's the same box just rotated. The perspective completely F's you up and makes you think that one is long and skinny and the other is short and fat. Get a piece of paper or a ruler or something and you will see that the short sides are the same size and the long sides are the same size.
