It's a 350 donkament so anything goes but the A on the river is going to cause people who were trapping previously to shove for tons of reasons, so when he checks that I'm def shipping.

How do we go about convincing players that having the same hand as each other isn't the most ****ing hilarious occurrence in the history of the species?

Why would you want to? Sounds like a good table to me.

LKJ maybe if you stopped being smugly contemptuous you'd realize a +EV table if you saw one.

Spoiler:
dog door.

i actually find those moments endearing.

it's a time where players aren't being total dickwads to each other and/or the dealer.

A hand I played some years ago that still bugs me....

9 handed 5/10 NLHE private cash game. A couple limps to me in MP with J10x so I call. Button and blinds are in. Flop comes 789

Chk, chk, I bet 40, button calls, everyone else folds. I'd been getting killed and only have about 500 at this point, button covers. Very little history with villain. My read at the time was that he was on the tight side, but not a total nit. I thought he could have something like Ax (x being an over/straightener) all the way up to monsters.

Turn is an os A. What do you do and why?

I don't think "OMG WE HAVE THE SAME HAND LMAOOOOOO" is actually much of a tell as to the person's ability.

Rich,

like 80% pot. Just shrug and bet. A million combo draws call you, two pairs, sets. You're allowed to go broke with half a stack and a two card straight on a draw heavy board.

LKJ,

It kind of is. Maybe not with 100% of the people that do it but it's got to have a pretty solid correlation.

Reminds me of when in The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King Todd Brunson calls over other pros to see how a random hand went down, "what are the odds?" type thing.

The takeaway from the others was that it was amateurish behavior.

Is that smug contemptuousness directed at me? I didn’t think this was the most interesting thing ever, but I did think it was a mildly interesting river question suitably appropriate for an OOT poker thread.

No no, definitely wasn't jabbing at you. This is a long-term grumpy thing of mine, and the scenario just brought it to mind. "Why is this FUNNY?!"

In a joke, the obv point of misdirection in the punchline is surprise.

Think of a scene in a dumb action movie where one character unmasks another and recognizes them right before dealing a death blow, they both laugh about it.

They're shocked they have the same hand, they couldn't have imagined the possibility.

Spoiler:
Because they're dumb.

It's not funny.

I think the laughter is more of a tension release because the player goes from worrying about the losing the hand to "whew at least it's a split" which is almost always verbalized as "Hey you play that crap?" as they happily show.

Might also be a glass half-full, half-empty scenario. For those anxious about losing the pot, they feel relief and laugh. Others will feel annoyed.

It also gives an opportunity for the same type of "funny" guy that says thing like, "I want my steak rare, just slap the cow on the ass and walk it through a warm room." The people that laugh at that laugh at jokes your kid's music teacher makes, or the rehearsed routine by a flight attendant.

God it's easy to be a misanthrope.

Guess who's playing poker tonight?

The 5/10 mix game does indeed run on Friday nights but I'll be playing 1/3 PLO and 2/5 NL until I get wicked lucky and run up my stack.

And of course I'll be posting hands here, if only because I'm a glutton for punishment...and because the advice here seems pretty decent. :P

A little later in the same event, a very active player one seat to my right and I both had TT. The hand wasn’t very interesting or difficult and I barely gave it a second thought. Not one I would have posted here.

On the plus side most people are PLO losers because of all of the common spots they'd never think were post-worthy.

Howard,

TT isn't very funny, no surprise you didn't think much of it. Now 77, that's some good comedy.
