Not a big fan of Wintersun, but Kai Hahto's old band Rotten Sound used to be incredible. Murderworks and Exit are the albums to get.
Didn't like the latest album Cycles, probably because the new drummer Sami Latva wrote lots of material for that one.
Rotten Sound - Targets (from Murderworks)
Rotten Sound - Burden (from Exit)
Rotten Sound should do the trick at least for fan(s) of Pig Destroyer.

Not very modern, but Pestilence's fourth album Spheres was too jazzy/technical for my taste. Check it out.
Pestilence - Mind Reflections
You might also like Atheist (especially Elements) and maybe even Cynic.
Atheist - Air
Cynic - Veil Of Maya
Let's also throw in some fusion grind from Finland.
Cause For Effect - Metronomic
Cynic and Pestilence already released their comeback albums and Atheist should follow suit this fall.
Another old death metal band that has made a comeback (an a strong one) is Gorefest.
Gorefest - Rise To Ruin
Didn't like Keep Of Kalessin's older stuff that much, but the latest album Reptilian is an improvement from basic black metal. Enter the thrash/death riffing and I'm in.
Keep Of Kalessin - The Awakening
