The new Bleeding Through is a good album also.

They may not get much respect from a lot of the death metal purists but it is actually a pretty heavy album.

New AILD also came out thats pretty good also.

I know these bands are pussies compared to black metal but they are good bands. And I think BT is actually heavier/faster than most give them respect for.

The only problem is that in the 00's they sold out big time plus the don't play th Jazz Sections when they play live. You should check out there **** from the 90's.
Their old stuff was good. I remember seeing them play a show with blood has been shed. Candiria definitely sold out tho. Their new **** sounds nothing like their old stuff.

That being said, if you're looking for some insane metal check out beneath the massacre. Super talented band. My only gripe is most of their songs sound the same.

I believe its true Burzum received a lot of his fame from his ****ed up past, but there are tons of black metal fans who hate him for the same reason. I personally love Burzum because his music just seems to scream black metal. It is some of the purest black metal there is, notable also are first mayhem, and early Ulver, especially Nattens Madrigal.

Songs like My Journey to the Stars, and anything off of Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, are just amazing pieces of work. His new album Belus reminds me of these earlier works, and has amazed me thus far.

You have to check out Pelican. All instrumental, more gloom/sludge than death metal or thrash, but great background music. I listen to them a lot when I'm playing.

Pelican - Mammoth

Pelican - Drought

And I didn't see them yet so I figured I would mention Mastodon. At least the first 2 albums, Remission & Leviathan.

Mastodon - March of the Fire Ants

Mastodon - Iron Tusk

Mastodon - Blood & Thunder

Amon Amarth - The Pursuit Of Vikings

Naglfar - The Perpetual Horrors

Satyricon - Now, Diabolical (Live) (couldn't find an album version)
Satyrican - KING

Dark Funeral - Attera Totus Sanctus

Children Of Bodom - Needled 24/7

Slayer - World Painted Blood

Arch Enemy - We Will Rise

For those that wondered why one would listen to extreme metal:
Metal for most is an acquired taste. For me it went like this:

Aerosmith/Bon Jovi -> Kiss -> Guns'N'Roses -> Metallica/Iron Maiden -> Pantera/Machine Head/Sepultura/Paradise Lost/Type O Negative/Paradise Lost -> Samael/Gorefest/Cannibal Corpse -> Children Of Bodom/In Flames/Cradle Of Filth/Dimmu Borgir -> Marduk/Darkthrone/Immortal

The first time I heard a lot of the bands I loved later on I thought they are just unmelodic noise.

Even if you think that Burzum is an amazing musician that doesn't make him any less of a psychopathic nazi and therefore shouldn't be promoted.

Similar to me. Once you start listening to "hard" music, hard isn't as hard as it once was, so you gravitate to harder and harder music. My best friend had to drag me kicking and screaming from GnR to Metallica, because I hated it when he first played it for me. Now they seem so tame.

Once I borrowed a Crytopsy album from the library. It was completely unlistenable. Years later, I now have all their albums.

I used to listen to a lot of Old School death metal back in the day. I also got a lot of people into the music back in the day.

There is nothing a Metal Head/Hardcore Kid loves more than conforming someone into a Metal/Hardcore.

On the flip side there's nothing worse than being a fan of Extreme Metal/Hardcore and someone tells you they like Metal/Hardcore also then proceeds to put on some cheesy Nu Metal. Such a disappointment.

This is slightly off topic as its not modern and it's not really in the spirit of the thread to post a Metallica-esque ballad... but anyway... you know what you're getting if you click this:

Nepal - Besando la Tierra

In remembrance of the 30,000 victims of the Argentine military dictatorship. As beautiful as thrash metal can ever be.

The first one is roughly on par with Cannibal Corpse.

The second is about burning stuff... and kids... and more stuff. With bonus references to Satan/hell.

I'm cursed
More! Blood and more chaos!
I like the mother's cries
So is how I need it
To set everything to burn

The flames that fascinate me
Burning the children that scream
In their cribs
Melting

yeah, I may have understated how disgusting this one is too

I'm not sure if they are from a war torn/rebel country but I wonder if it's written about things they may have seen growing up (kind of on a political level) or if they just came up with this **** on there own.

This is kinda disturbing and I have been listening to Death Metal since I was like 10...lol

Edit: Ok I see now it's Dino from Fear Factory side project (with a bunch of other famous Metal Musicians as members including members of Sepultura) that kind of explains it. So I'm going to go ahead and say it's a semi-politcal statement.

Gorguts thats some old school **** right there. Nothing as brutal as a Flock Of Swans.

Maybe Asesino will write a song about burning Swans flying over then crashing into an orphanage.

Sup guys!

Been listening to Metal for like 11 years, converted from rap, out of all genres, which I haven't listened to since. Started out with stuff like COB, FF, Dimmu, Satyricon and COF.
Stopped listening to them at around 2003.

Over the years gotten a more mellow taste I'd say, and I also listen to a lot of other music, there's good stuff in almost all genres IMO

However, what I haven't yet seen mentioned is and reason I'd post here is

Wintersun. Get the album from 2004, it's ****ing awesome.
