Re: OOT modern extreme metal thread

I discovered some horrid bands that had such awesome album covers during those pre-internet shopping sprees. Pungent Stench is the first one that comes to mind. The first album cover was so twisted, but they were god awful. Just unlistenable, and I liked extreme and brutal death metal at the time.

Hahaha. I remember making my buddy drive me from school to the mall the day Chamber Music came out so I could buy it. I tried to put it in in the car and he was like "dude....I drove you down here, don't make me listen to it".

The one that sticks out the most to me is Amon Amarth. I had such high hopes and then got it home and it was music about Vikings and ****.

Re: OOT modern extreme metal thread

I didn't like them either. It was a fun gamble, but there were some horrid bands in that era.

Bolt Thrower was another one. They were a good band, but they didn't bring much to the table. Their first album cover was so sick. I even had the T-shirt before I ever heard them.

Pretty much any band thanked in the liner notes of the Florida Death Metal scene from the late 80's/ early 90's I bought an album from. That and whoever had merch in the Blue Grape catalogs.

This is most likely the NYHC band Candiria. Unless they influenced other bands to fuse Jazz in with Metal also. But this is the only band I could think of that does this.

Candiria - Pull

The only problem is that in the 00's they sold out big time plus the don't play th Jazz Sections when they play live. You should check out there **** from the 90's.

Re: OOT modern extreme metal thread

The first Show I ever went to was Overkill back when I was like 12.

Then I got into the NYHC scene when I was 15 (this had to be back in 94 or so) when my old HS has a battle of the bands and it was mostly NYHC bands from Brooklyn.

I used love going to the Record Store and picking **** out at random or by suggestion or classmates/friends.

I was really into Death Metal back then. I actually got back into Metal because of the resurgence of Hardcore/Metalcore, (like a few Metalcore bands still but a lot of it got real old real quick though but it is what brought me back into metal) and New School Death Metal aka Melodic Death Metal. I would have to say the early 00's was not good for the Hardcore/Metal scene. To many of the 90's bands sold out trying to become big and there music suffered big time because of it. I couldn't find anything that got me going until about 07 or so.

Not a lot of death metal love songs though. Plenty of songs about alienation, not much about "normal" relationships. Makes sense to me that someone who is asexual could be drawn to the genre.

Probably been posted before but I lol'd: Slipknot.

I think his point was that this music seems almost scientifically designed to be repulsive as possible to almost all females.

Not trolling here, but I've listened to a few of the links and can someone explain to me what's to like about extreme metal, b/c I truly don't get it. I mean, besides the level of musicianship, which is obvious.

Thanks, nuisance. That's gotta be them. That name instantly struck me as familiar.

Interesting stuff. I'll definitely check them out.

I don't think it's designed only to be as repulsive as possible to females. A lot of it is also designed to be as repulsive as possible to everyone who isn't a metalhead. "Everyone else can f**k off!" is a feature, not a bug. At least that's how it appears to me as an outsider (and with that I'll stop posting in this thread).

Re: OOT modern extreme metal thread

Yeah Dark Force like I said check out the first 2-3 albums after that they went all soft with singing and ****.

They are very abstract and original.

You wanna check out Process of Self-Development, Beyond Reasonable Doubt and Surrealistic Madness. These are there best albums.

Yeah I get your point.

Extreme metal is definitely an acquired taste though. I don't think anybody just randomly starts listening to Nile one day.

When I was maybe 13, one of my classmates had Slayer on his portable CD player. I though it sounded like horrible random noise, with zero melody and that all the songs sounded the same. He made a comment about how they were more talented than some random pop group, because they "played their own instruments". I lol'd at this, because I thought their playing sounded horrendous.

Then when I started playing guitar I stumbled across some Slayer and was impressed by how fast they played. Still thought it sounded mega weird but eventually got into it.

Like even a year ago I thought something like Nile was just taking things way too far, but now I don't blink an eye when I hear it. I'm not that into the more extreme side of metal though. I love Goatwhore and Meshuggah, but a lot of stuff just sounds like they're trying to play as hard, fast and noisily as possible. Stuff like Nile, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse etc. is the sort of metal I'd classify as "extreme" and on the whole it's pretty lame. It just has such a tired, uninspiring sound (although Nile aren't bad).

Metal is def not for everyone but Metal Heads are fans for life. It's not just a trend like tons of other style of music. It's not cool to be a Metal head so most people don't take the time to actually listen to it. It's music for outcasts and misfits. That is why most people that listen to it started when they were in there teens or younger.

And for as long as it's been around it's still going and probably stronger than ever 25+ years now.

These bands you quote in this paragraph and basically the forefathers of Death Metal back in the 80's back then it was all about seeing who could one up each other with shock, speed and lyrics. That has kinda died off a bit and new school death metal bands are starting to incorporate more melodies and such into there music. (basically evolving)

See Despised Icon for example I'm pretty sure they are a mix of hardcore kids, classic metal heads and Death metal kids. That is why when you see them they look like Wiggers (hardcore kids, which is actually the scene I grew up in and still love) and metal heads. There music is def on the Melodic Death Metal side but there Vocals are a mix of hardcore and death metal. (with that stupid pig squeal that to many bands are using these days)

My point is the music has evolved and if you are only looking at the god fathers of extreme metal you are missing out.

There are tons of Females into Metal.

Red Chord, Black Santa

And to the dude who said Amon Amarth sucks, i respectfully disagree.

What exactly classifies as extreme metal? Is Gojira extreme metal?

I guess Gojira is without any doubt extreme metal, and they would be one of the best examples of "MODERN extreme metal".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_metal

Here's one band from Estonia, sounding somewhat similar to Gojira (and Meshuggah), modern, massive apocalyptic death metal: http://www.myspace.com/horricane

I wouldn't go that far. Sold out is too harsh of a statement.

I joined them in '04 and played with them till they stopped touring. We played a few songs from the glory days, but since John also left, his replacement wasn't good enough to play the better songs. We did play Pull, Temple Of Sickness, and Faction though. I tried to teach the guy 300% Density, Mathematics and Constant Velocity, but he couldn't do it.
