Billy Rymer tho. Clip especially great since he rips Mike Portnoy a new one.

Saw parkway drive yesterday here in Belgium, I'd say if you have a chance to go see them... it's well worth it.

Portnoy leaving Dream Theater is just something that will always be a mystery to me. I realize it wasn't completely voluntary on Portnoy's part, but he was 90% at fault from everything I've read--he asked for a 5 year hiatus, but he knew the rest of the band would say no, so he might as well have sent in his resignation letter.

Me too. Not sure why he'd feel the need to have 5 years off. One would've been plenty. There's not a drummer on the planet that will fit the role, regardless of how much better they are then Mike.

But the 3 (I think) webisodes they did for the search was freaking awesome.

Exactly. That point is stated enough. Mangini is a much better drummer than Portnoy. But Portnoy was more than just a drummer. He was the primary band spokesperson, he wrote about half the lyrics, he co-produced everything. He was in charge of their video releases, and the setlists. In essence, he was the band's leader. I don't know if Petrucci can do all those duties and I don't think anyone else in the band wants to.

This is a friend of mines band who is starting to make a name for themselves. The main guitarist (also studio vox in the first vid) is probably the most proficient shredder I've ever seen. If you search "Greg Harrison" on youtube, you'll find some insane guitar lesson videos. It's very Meshuggatera, but I dig it. 8 and 9 string guitars were bound to happen some time.

Not up to date on any metal these days. Since high school, been a huge Slayer/Cannibal Corpse fan; in college, loved the early As I Lay Dying.

Any recs for bands since 2005 that have speed, great guitar riffs, vicious dymanics along those lines? Preferably stuff available on Spotify. Thanks.
