We've had a metal thread that was mostly hardcore, and then there was a thread about some concert tour featuring some washed up old dudes who play ****ty music now.

This thread is for discussion of modern death/black/grind etc. metal. Or, in other words, if your idea of good metal is the new metallica album then gtfo.

I'll start with possibly my 2 favorite songs of all time, from the latest Nile album, Those Whom The Gods Detest. This is the sickest **** ever, especially the drumming. Before this album I'd never really been into Nile even though it was obvious the drummer was a freak.

My tastes cover a wide range of sub-genres, although I hate getting into ******ed arguments over which genre(s) a certain band belongs to, which is a disturbing trend on forums and youtube comments.

In terms of black metal, I'm not a snob. I don't insist on only listening to black metal from Norwegian bands from 1992 or whatever. I like some more melodic catchier black metal. Chthonic is probly my favorite, they're from Taiwan. Even though they list COF as among their strongest influences, I really can't stand COF. The vocals make me want to hurt kittens.

A mainstay in my listening rotation is Black Dahlia Murder. The odd thing about them is that I absolutely love 3 of their albums, but Miasma was just flat and I can't get into it at all.

I'm interested to hear what songs/bands really got people into metal. For me, it was Meshuggah. For this type of music, Pig Destroyer and Cephalic Carnage are the only bands I can listen to anymore. Especially CC. The talent level in that band is rediculous and the fact they opened up a show out here with a brutal version of the King Of The Hill theme was just pure awesomeness.

I read an article from the early 00's that listed unknown heavy and extreme metal bands that were coming up. They gave the name, short resume and what they sounded like. For most bands, it was "Fast double bass and grinding guitars.... Gutteral vocals and blast beats... and blah blah blah". For Pig Destroyer, all it said was "Pain".

Don't know if they are "extreme metal" or not but the first modern bands I listened to were Despised Icon, Job For a Cowboy and IveBeenShot. I don't listen to any of them these days though.

I like a lot of the newer bands As I Lay Dying, Bleeding Through.( I Know,I know these 2 bands aren't really extreme though), Despised Icon, Through the Eyes of the Dead, BDM is a mainstay for me as well. I actually didn't listen to much metal for quit a while until a lot of these bands started coming out.

Those FF songs are hot as hell. I haven't really listened to them since the 90's but the new **** is def hot. The same thing with Machine Head there new album is the best since the ones from the 90's.

I don't like Black Metal it's seems to corny/cheesy to me.

I hope this thread takes off I could use some new bands to get into.

Meshuggah is awesome, dont hate, I listen pretty much solely to every swedish prog/math/death/etc metal band, their all sick.

If your looking for some new black metal stuff, look for the new Dimmu Borgir album out in fall, that will be sick...

Despised Icon is pretty good but I can't get past how they look like such douchey wiggers in all their videos.

JFAC is meh, I like Embedded but I can't get into anything else.

The vocalist for JFAC also does vocals for Fleshwrought, which I'm digging.

It's often cheesy for sure, but I can get past that if the music is good.

Educate me on something. I read a review a couple of years ago about a Death Metal band that had the habit of breaking down into lush jazz pieces from time-to-time.

The reviewer seemed to hold them in high regard, but I am clueless as I am old and stuck in the Exodus, Metal Church, Overkill era still.

In college I tried starting an indie metal label (epic fail) and put out the demo/EP from a band called Bethledeign. It ended up being the label's only release.

I got into metal when I was a freshman in high school and a buddy slipped me his copy of Antichrist Superstar to listen to at home. That cd was basically contraband, so listening to music and having that sneaky "wrong" stigma attached to it was pretty cool. And it was better than anything on the local rock radio so I was pretty blown away at how deep and meaningful music can be, yet still be really heavy and makes you want to move. After that I would basically go to the mall every week and buy albums that were in the metal section, based only on the album cover really.

I was thinking about this the other day, too. It really bums me out that kids will never get that experience again. Nowadays, you can hear about a band, read their wiki, listen to all of their stuff on youtube, and if you want buy the music on itunes. Taking over an hour just looking through all of the CDs in the record store, reading the backs of most of them, finally choosing which one to buy, and then going home to give it a first listen was awesome.

I'm super hit and miss when it comes to black/extreme metal. Most of the super growly stuff just doesn't sound good to me. I do love BDM, Devildriver, Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, and on the lighter end of the spectrum, In Flames, Soilwork, Slipknot. For me the big three will always be Manson, NIN, and Tool. I wore those CDs out when I was a kid.

I'm curious to see what everyone's first metal concert experience was like. Mine was Ozzfest '99. There were 4 of us and one guy's dad was good enough to drive us the 3 hours there and 3 hours back the next day. I had read about Slipknot who hasn't come out with their album yet and it interested me so I made us leave at like 7am so we'd get there in time to see them open the 2nd stage. There was obv nobody there so we got right in front and I can vividly remember Clown pointing at me all menacingly and it legit scared me for a minute. Good times. That was also one of the years where they scheduled the main and second stage to go back and forth, so you'd have to run across the place to see every band.

Mad sick story bro, cuz Slipknot's extreme bro, they have 25 people in the band so you know they're heavy and extreme bro.

Slipknot was cool when I was a teenager,fk that **** now, even though their bassist just overdosed like a month ago.

My first metal concert was actually sorta pretty screwed up on my part. I went myself since dont really have many local buddies who like metal, and my wardrobe was an epic fail. I didn`t know that your 99 % of the people wear black t-shirt with some metal band, lol. But it was an Opeth concert back in summer 07, moshing, and everything else was fun with about 500 people inside a club.

Shrug, I like what sounds good to me. I'm sure you can bring up 10 different bands that you love but I hate, it's just personal tastes you know? I don't like music b/c it's cool, because if that were the case, I'd say I love Mastodon when in actuality I'd prob rather listen to Justin Beiber.

So what did you wear to the concert? Something like work clothes or did you pull a Freaks and Geeks and rip your jacket and put egg in your hair?

I always thought the whole "record store experience" was way overrated and over-romanticized. Searching for an album I want is simply a means to an end. The more efficient it is, the more time I'll have to spend actually listening to music. I don't get a thrill out of having to go to a store and then looking through 100s of CDs to find one I want.

I never liked Slipknot at all, or Mastadon.

Manson was what I always thought of as "chick metal." Cuz back in high school, the only people that liked him were angry depressed girls with dyed black hair. I will say however, that he's a smart dude and whenever he talks for any length of time, it's sure to be interesting.

I've been to so many metal concerts and shows that I can't recall what my first one was. I got into metal early on and then graduated to extreme stuff and caught a ton of the old school greats. It's probably easier to say that aside from the newer bands of the last 4 or 5 years, the only popular or underground level popular band I never saw from the last 20 years is Carcass. Big shame too. Descanting The Insalubrious is a top 10 of all-time easy.

Oh, I get that (and agree with you). My point was that back 10-12 years ago, information wasn't available like it is today. And only having one or two buddies who liked metal made it so that when I walked into a record store, I didn't know what I wanted so it was fun to look through all the albums and take a guess and then get home and see what I got.

I think with Manson it was the first music I heard that was any semblance of metal, so you always kind of hold that first music you hear in super high regard. I can also still listen to the first couple of Korn records or the Coal Chamber stuff and get into it, even though that kind of music isn't really what I'm currently into.
