In NYC, Chicago, or another city with a lot of old elevators I imagine this trick would work quite a bit.
I have only ever been in one elevator where a close door button produced a definite result. It was an older elevator at Mathes hall at Western Washington U. It was 5:50 and the liquor store closed at 6pm. We got on at the 6th floor and started going down to 2nd floor to exit the building. The elevator stopped at the 3rd floor. Usually people on the 3rd floor would hit the elevator button on their way to the stairs, and if the doors opened immediately they would ride the elevator, otherwise they'd go down 1 flight of stairs. So when the elevator stopped at the 3rd floor, I started immediately pounding the door close button to minimize the time wasted (which would be a whole 10 seconds or so...
). The doors opened, two girls started walking towards the open elevator and the doors closed immediately after opening fully. The girls looked shocked and appalled that we could do such a thing. I have never seen anyone look so disappointed in me. We hastily exited the building after getting off on 2, and made it to the liquor store just in time (though the person buying got me MONARCH 151 instead of Bacardi).
Every other time I have used the door close button I see it as a coincidence that the doors closed a short while after.
