i've never seen anyone's bag get moved unless it won't fit. also, why? there's not enough overhead bin room in the plane for everyone's carryon => i'm going to take the first spot i see so i don't have to check my bag
Travel more. It happens. I know people who will remove bags that have been put up by people in the back and then the flight attendants deal with the bags. These people also travel a lot more than you so the flight attendant is going to care about them more than you.
If the overhead space has gotten to the point where you can take any spot, the FAs will tell you to do so (like if you are in the last two zones). But otherwise scotchnrocks is right - one person screwing up the overhead space area causes a ripple effect and then everyone is having to go backwards anyway to fit their carryon in a bin so now YOU are going to have to wait for those people to go backwards in front of you before you get your bag.
Also, if you have a carry on bag and it doesn't fit into the overhead space going straight back (and therefore you take two carryons' worth of horizontal space) and the plane isn't an RJ, I judge and hate you. Also if you fling your duffle or something small that could fit under the seat in front of you and take up the overhead space instead of putting it in front of you, I hate you. If you try to take on more than 2 carryons, I hate you. If you try to sneak your carryon into first class overhead space when you're seated in coach, I hate you.
Strangely enough, if you recline your seat in front of me, I really don't care.
