Look into Citizens eco-drive watches. Similar price range, much nicer looking (imo), and never need to worry about battery or winding. I have two eco-drives and couldn't be happier with them.

It's still pretty handy if you work in a casino.

Jewelry is a good comparison. Makeup not so much.

Fwiw, I don't wear jewelry. I told my husband to skip the engagement ring (he didn't,) and have a $400 plain white gold band that I put on when we go out.
Technically I own foundation, 1 mascara, 1 eye liner and a lip gloss. Aside from the mascara, I only really pull them out for special occasions with photographers.

Cliffs: I still don't get the appeal or the guise that it is a useful piece of machinery
...buy a bracelet.

If you would be willing to go into detail about how/why these look stupid, I would genuinely appreciate it. Like would you see someone wearing this and think "That guy is a ...."? Fill in the blank.

Yes the first time I had it serviced it was losing time badly and unpredictably. This last time the goddamn crown popped off, and I really do have to believe that needing to adjust the time on a pretty regular basis had something to do with that. I brought it to Time-Tec in Los Angeles. They're authorized/certified and appear to be very well-regarded. When they serviced it the first time I don't remember exactly what they did. This last time I believe they replaced the crown and stem.

The Citizen is pretty nice looking. There's also a quartz Seiko that's pretty good. I personally like the examples I posted above more, especially the non-Hamilton ones. I definitely like the idea of having a more off-the-beaten-path watch. Maybe that's as douchey as specifically wanting one of the bigger brands, I dunno. But that's part of the appeal for me for sure.

RE: not having to change the battery, I should have pointed out that the MWC is a quartz/auto hybrid, has a battery that is re-charged by watch movement.

So? Other people do. This might surprise you, but sometimes people like things you don't like, or don't like things you do like. If this were a thread about books, would you make a big stink about how you don't really like reading books?

Wow. What model Omega is it? Screw down crown? FWIW, I have tons of watches, so they're all constantly running down, basically I'm setting the time on a watch every morning when I put one on, and I've only ever had a problem with a crown once (and in that case, it was just the threads on the tube). Maybe if you're like super rough when you pull the crown, like you have gigantic hamfists and zero dexterity I could see maybe causing a problem this way.

Losing time is probably just a general service issue and not related to setting the time too frequently.

I answered the question first..and followed with the comment about not understanding the pretense of watch over bracelet.

You can pretend that I am somehow "making a stink" if it makes your lady parts tingle...but that's simply not the reality of my post.

It's a Seamaster Aqua Terra 2503.50.00.

Local watch dealer just made me an appealing offer for it, so it's going away soon.

Nobody (other than the guy who said it's handy for card dealers) is claiming it's for utilitarian purposes, though. So your question is basically no different than "bracelet type X is dumb, why not just buy bracelet type Y"?

Weird. Maybe you just got one with a bum crownstem. Have you had trouble since that was replaced?

Is H3 the brand name? Tritium is Hydrogen with 2 neutrons, giving it atomic weight of 3, hence the label H3.

The problem with tritium watches IMO is that eventually the tubes will fade as the H3 deteriorates.

+1

edit: wonder if it is female thing: to see the utilitarian side of the watch.
edit2: Is OP a guy or a girl? Just thought of a guy wearing a purely decorative bracelet. ^^

Had the crown and stem replaced only a couple of weeks ago. I think I'm ultimately just not an automatic watch guy.

The brand of the watch I've been calling H3 is apparently GWS, which appears to stand for Greens Watch Services. They have some relationship with Traser it would appear, but Traser is not the manufacturer of the watch (although Traser makes a very similar, slightly smaller, version with a mineral crystal). It comes from here: http://www.militarywatchshop.co.uk/

The half-life of Tritium is around 10 years, I will worry about the loss of illumination then!

I've decided to purchase the GWS H3, which will take a little while to get here from the UK.

Wrong again...

There are posts discussing the necessity/utility of date features, and comments about the ticking, the powering, and we were told, in the OP IIRC, to ignore the bands completely.

comments about the ticking!? oh well, you got me there. Yes, some real brute utilitarian discussion going on. Of course there is SOME utility in a watch (like I said already). The point is there's no utilitarian difference between a $20 timex and a $10k rolex (in fact, in many ways a rolex is less utilitarian than a timex). People aren't buying things other than the timex for their utility.

Look, whatever, it doesn't matter, you can make these smug contrarian douchebag comments about literally ANYTHING people spend money on. Like, some people will spend $100+ on a bottle of wine when ****ing flipflop muscato will get you just as ****ed up. People spend $500 on aldens instead of $60 on rockports. People spend $100k on a benz when they could get a used ford festiva, both will move you from point A to point B.

And the great thing is, nobody can EVER prove that you're wrong. Because it's all about personal preferences, which are inherently subjective. Cool.
