OOT used to be a place for great movie discussion, and I think it can be again!

This thread is for posting about movies of any kind, be they comedies, Oscar bait, animation, art house flicks, or whatever. But where I think OOT will really shine is talking about Blockbuster Popcorn Movies - and lo and behold, Summer Blockbuster Season starts in less than 24 hours!

So OOT, let's talk about movies!

Avengers: Infinity War opens in wide release tomorrow, and is expected to be the 2nd biggest movie of all time, with a shot at taking over 1st place from the Star Wars franchise!

Early reviews are positive, with an 86% Tomatometer (123/143 Fresh) and 7.7 average rating on RT, 68 on Metacritic, and 9.3 on IMDB.

Kimmel has been having Avengers week, with like 5 cast members on every night.

It's the first movie entirely filmed on the new Arri Alexa IMAX camera, which means that it's best seen on a bigscreen IMAX at the 1.90:1 IMAX aspect ratio (taller than usual movies) if you want to get the full picture. If no IMAX, whatever the biggest screen is near you should suffice. My tix are for Saturday night.

This is it: the culmination of 18 Marvel movies and beginning of the end of Phase 3.

Is anybody else pumped for this?

no. lol marvel movies.

OP - this is fine of course, but most movie lovers just post in the thread in the lounge anyway. because that subforum is so quiet, that thread is always at the top and posted in pretty much daily, whereas this one is likely to fall off the front page and become largely dormant.

That's fine. And the Lounge is fine for arthouse movies and classics and stuff. I lurk there rarely, almost never post there. But I don't trust the Lounge's judgment for mainstream movies, they're not representative of good reactions and discussion. For example, there's Star Wars discussion in both OOT and the Lounge, and both cater to the demos of each forum, with one being more mainstream than the other.

There was a Russian art film posted in 4L. Instead of re-posting it, I will critique and spoil. It was great.

Spoiler:
Around 10 minutes, hosted on youtube. It starts out with a guy acting shady, possibly on drugs, on a city staircase heading towards the underground. He slowly makes his way downstairs, and the assumption is that he's there to commit some kind of crime or behave nefariously. He then goes into a room and picks up something from a friend, can't remember, maybe a CD. The rest of the film is him moving up the stairs, which he is doing in a slow and awkward manner. There are other people around, and then it hits me that the guy is disabled with some sort of motor palsy, and he is likely embarrassed about it which is why he's moving so slowly and awkwardly. Which caused me to feel bad for presuming criminal intentions.

5/5 stars, one of the best works of art I've ever seen.

This is a pretty good point and the same reason the netflix thread in oot is far better than ootv in general, if you’re not in the highbrow clique you’ll get very odd suggestions on what is entertaining.

Basically all my friends are taking a day off to go see infinity war during a matinee next week to avoid a crowd full of kids and it’s been exciting since marvel movies have been some of the few movies worth seeing in the theatre.

Crossposted from the LC thread because I didn't see this one had been started yet:

This is probably a long shot but does anyone remember a movie from the ‘80s/maybe early ‘90s that involved a post apocalyptic underground biker gang that would execute traitors/enemies by strapping them to a motorcycle along with some sort of glowing round bomb and sending them down a tunnel to explode?

I swear I watched this movie as a kid and have never been able to figure out the title. Been haunting me for years.

Miajag: Sorry, I have no idea, myself. Hopefully somebody else does.

Gadgetguru: I agree, Marvel definitely makes the best comic book/superhero movies, and popcorn movies are more worth it to see in theaters, since they benefit from the big screen treatment far more than regular dramas or comedies that you can watch at home with little difference.

Late night showings with reserved seating are where it's at imo.

Tuma: If you have a link, I'll give it a watch. I have no idea where to look for it in 4L otherwise.

At the risk of art housing this thread up, I tend to follow directors rather than movies. Sean Baker is my favorite at the moment. He tends to focus on marginalized communities. His most famous was The Florida Project out last year, but I also recommend Starlet (about porn stars in the San Bernadino valley) and Tangerine (about trans sex workers in LA).

patron,

The problem with this thread is I love movies, but like to go in knowing as little as possible about them. Maybe at least have people post movie titles in bold first and a couple lines before saying anything about them. Or maybe spoiler talk of anything that hasn't been out for a few weeks? I dunno.

Some current/upcoming movies I'm looking forward to seeing:

A Quiet Place

Beirut

Avengers: Infinity War

Deadpool 2

Ocean's 8

El D,

Good idea. Maybe we can roughly adapt the general spoiler rules of OOTV. Pre-release, do not spoil movies. Use spoiler tags for anything that could be construed as a spoiler. Post-release, general movie reviews and discussion are fine, and then the question is when should spoiler tags be lifted? I can see an argument for requiring spoiler tags until opening day, or until after opening weekend, or possibly even a week or two. What do you guys think?

All,

For the time being, please post the Movie Title that you are discussing in bold. Then leave a few lines, where you can say anything general about the movie, and then if you want to discuss something that could be construed as a spoiler, do so in spoiler text.

Example:

Avengers: Infinity War

I'm totally looking forward to this movie!

Spoiler discussion: (not really, in this case)

Spoiler:

It's gonna be good!

Patron, there’s also the issue of tags being different on tapatalk. Most of use are still getting spoilered hard. I think on tapatalk it’s
spoiler instead of spoil
On OOTV, they have a stickied spoiler warning for users on mobile devices that reads:

Quote:
All,

As you may know, the spoiler text tag does not work perfectly on many mobile devices. At times the contents of the spoiler text will display automatically without you clicking the box.

OOTV is also full of posts using spoiler text.

There's no perfect solution to this. So just please be warned that if you're browsing this forum on a device (I don't have this problem on my iOS devices using Safari, but I know it's an issue if you use the 2p2 iOS ap) that it's something you may run into and be careful or find out that it really was Hector's Baby.

I think that applies here with Tapatalk as well. We can ask for people to use both spoiler tags, but people may forget from time to time. On mobile, people should either be careful and deal with the risk, or wait until using a computer.

All,

If you need to use spoiler tags, please try to use both sets of spoiler tags.

The regular spoiler tags are: [spoil] and then close it with a backslash spoiler tag.

The Tapatalk spoiler tags are:
and then close it with a backslash spoiler tag.

You can reply to this post, if you still do not understand, and see the codes used for the following example:
This is the correct way to make a spoiler post.

Tuma,

That's an interesting video, esp with the music choice. I'm curious what the YT comments say, but not curious enough to run them through a translator. I thought it might be a hit in 4L, and even went to the thread you listed, but couldn't find any discussion on it, and just got distracted by ScreaminAsian's pics.

The Stuntman

One of my favorites of all time, this one stars Peter O’Toole and Barbara Hershey. It is about an arrogant and autocratic movie director (O’Toole) making a movie after the accidental death of his stuntman.

The Only Game in Town

Caught this on TCM a while back and it’s a cool movie I had never heard of. Directed by George Stephens (Shane, Giant) it’s basically the story of Warren Beatty losing his ass at craps while in an on/off romance with Liz Taylor. Although the movie is set in Vegas, it was filmed entirely in Paris due to a personal issue of Taylor’s. Lol 5.8 on IMDb but I liked it.

El D,

One thing I liked about A Quiet Place is that

there's basically no exposition of how the world came to be. You're just dropped in to it.

Also, and this is kinda obvious but I liked it, while virtually all of the movie takes place in an outdoor, rural setting, there's not a single moment of bird song.

I completely agree with this. As I have gotten older, I have wanted to know less and less (which I feel is also correlated to previews becoming more and more a rendition of the entire plot).

Rounders

The working title was actually called The Lowest a Man Can Get and featured a wall street guy dumping his portion of the nest’s egg down the drain on a bad investment in one scene, and then turning down sex with Famke Janssen in another. Then the director realized how unlikely this would all seem so they switched it to a dumbass poker player.

Spoiler:
0/5 stars, won’t watch again. plus this thread sux with the current non-spoiler etiquette!

Lol. Nice writeup.

The spoiler etiquette is only intended for upcoming movies that have not been released yet. For old movies, just list the title in bold, hit the enter key a couple times, and then spoil away/discuss whatever you want about the movie.

For new releases, the question is, how long should the spoiler tags be used for? I asked previously: I can see an argument for requiring spoiler tags until opening day, or until after opening weekend, or possibly even a week or two. What do you guys think?

Nobody responded to that, so unless/until there is further input on that, then I will suggest that people use spoiler tags through opening weekend. And then after Sunday night, spoiler tags are no longer needed. I think that tracks with what happened in the Star Wars thread for The Force Awakens. Let's give that a try for Avengers this weekend, if people post about it, and see how that goes.

use common sense. there's general discussion, and then there are actual spoilers.

i generally try to put everything beyond super general overall opinion stuff in spoiler tags, even for movies that have been out a while. but most people won't do that, and that's generally okay.

but spoilers are a different matter. 'a quiet place' has been out for weeks, but it was still #1 at the box office earlier this week, and discussing certain elements of the movie without spoiler tags would be an enormous dick move. even if you're posting about a movie that's been out a few years, spoiler tags should be used for some stuff (or more likely, just don't mention the twists/deaths/ending in your post, because why would you need to?).
