Maybe if you were more enthusiastic in your emails you'd be the one getting headhunted for promotions!

Normally I'd say it's a tarp but as Greg is the most trustworthy person on the planet I'd probably do it after 6 other regulars clicked it and reported back on its awesomeness. Click it Dids!

I'm guilty of overusing ! in work emails. I find myself ending the last sentence of each email with ! as I think it removes any bitchy sting that might otherwise be felt.

Below are actual endings to emails this week.

Thank you!

(You're going to be late?) See you soon!

Thanks!

Will do!

Fawk, I need to stop this. Thank you LKJ.

Bitchy sting is obvious through context and the presence or absence of exclamation marks does nothing to change that (other than adding a dash of disingenuousness)

This is hilarious. I communicate/partner with about 25-27 advertising agencies and this overuse of the exclamation point seems to strictly be a woman thing. Every single correspondence is riddled with exclamation points. I just assume they're conveying their Adderall energy through email.

Lapka,
Maybe later.

Josie,
It's not your fault. Society has gotten together and slowly but surely stigmatized ending a sentence normally and has stopped properly treating exclamation marks as the exception rather than the rule. Your impulse to protect yourself from being misinterpreted is pretty reasonable.

While I stubbornly persist in my email/text tone, I do err on the side of picking up the phone and calling people who don't necessarily know me as well whenever I feel like what I have to say could be taken badly. I know I'm much more likely to come across pleasantly in that medium despite the fact that I write the same exact way I talk out loud.

Agreed, those feel unconvincing. The true salve to a bitchy sting is multiplying the number of vowels, coupled with a relevant emoji. And a solitary exclamation mark is an unhappy one -- always bring friends.

Thaaaaanks!!! xD mwah

LKJ,

Pfffffff!!!!!!!!!!

Ha! See! You don't even need to write a sentence! You can totally convey what do you want to convey solely with exclamation points and smileys!

Naaaaa..... On the serious note, I would say that exclamanation points are there for a reason. And if I want to convey an emotion, like a special gratitude or being upset I am so gonna use them. And if men think that showing an emotion is soo uncool, it is their problem.

The key is to use appropriate communication tools to convey what do you want to convey to the recipient. Words, emojis, exclamation marks are just that. Some here use gifs in very skilled manner as a communication tool. Artificially limiting yourself will decrease your communicative efficiency. Limiting yourself with tools that are specifically there to express emotions makes it more difficult for you to express emotions.

See foatie's post and I think that for everyone is obvious which gender communicates their emotions better.
