Then Sonny and Hagen got into another blowup over the whole thing later. The one that culminated in Sonny screaming that if he had a real Sicilian for a consigliere, he wouldn't be in this shape. "Pop had Genco. Look what I've got." Then he instantly feels bad and apologizes. Sonny was furious to have a chief adviser preaching diplomacy.

Vito didn't approve the kill of the police captain, so there's that. He was laid up, and his boys concocted that plan. It's in that same clip I posted. Vito only ever found out the story after he got back from the hospital.
