Lol, yes I'm familiar with rise / run, which is what I based my estimate on.

True, but nothing steeper than 42-45 degrees, and the downhill wrecks shoes.

Because of working on roofs, I can estimate slope +- like 1 degree.

At about 23-25 degrees your tools, not just round ones, will start sliding off most roofs and you have to be careful where you put them.

At about 28-30 degrees you are in danger of sliding off most roofs unless you are tied off or on a hip or valley.

Past 35 or so, you're definitely having your hands on something and not really working w/o ropes.

Somewhere before 45 you just have your weight on the rope all the time instead of just catching you if you slip - though, you can still get up a hip or valley.

degrees != %grade though

Maybe some of the confusion.

Running a 45% grade = running a 24 degree slope = feasible.

45 degree slope = 100% grade = not feasible.

From this it would appear it was about 55% grade. I'm probably off, but I don't think by this much. If people want to dispute the 95% grade estimate, though, then they should jump in on +/- 1 degree skill claim. I'm not saying you don't have chops, but 1 degree... 246 toothpicks!

given you think you are running up a 45 degree slope, you do in fact seem to be lumped in with your average person.

I'm curious tho how you think trail running gives you some sort of experience on what degree slopes are. Are you going out there with surveying equipment and measuring each slope so you get experience with what their true values are in relation to how they look/feel?

Part of my job is putting a device on a roof and recording the slope. I've done it hundreds of times.

I may well be less accurate outside of 10-35 degrees though. That's my wheelhouse.

Fair enough; I may have to measure it.

The majority of my hill routes are measured.

Of course, but my take is this: "Hmmm, that roof looks 27-29 degrees... ah, it's 30." I'm not saying you don't have chops, like I said.

I'd bet on micro.

Visually estimate slope within 1 degree of an exact estimate with a statistically high degree of confidence? Dust off your wallet...

LoL,

To be fair, maybe micro doesn't just visually estimate, but also gets up there to see how much shrinkage his balls have (or how much his tools slide).

Last couple of pages really demonstrating exactly why this thread is so sorely needed. Keep up the great work LOL.

More by feel than look. Seriously not a big deal. Surprising how much difference a couple degrees makes.

LBR is a truck driver. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew for sure if something were a 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 percent grade.

Lol. I think I'm out of containment, but I think, at worst, my hill is 35 degrees (I'll measure it this week), and I also think no way can micro spot a slope within 1 degree of exact figure estimate. What kind of money do you got 9999?

I trust your feel over your view, for sure, but how much are you willing to put on your feel being +/- 1 degree accurate?

Lol. This would take a lot of work. I'd have to either be paid several hundred dollars or be betting at least a couple thousand.

And I said "+- like 1 degree". Not sure I'd bet on 1. I would bet on 2 for between 10 and 35.

people can do crazy stuff like cut off an exact number of cards in a deck with practice...but impossible for micro to know within a degree the slope of a roof with practice

Lol, really? What serious runner doesn't know this, and/or relies on a watch, lol. Give me a little credit, please, lol.

I'm inclined to grade this topic a C. I also bet on micro.
