This is not true. Most parents who can afford to pay for some/all of college tuition/living expenses. Many kids move back home for a few years after college or when they drop out and pay no (or way below market) room and board. Or if they work right after high school, they live at home and save up money for a few years.
The memes about playing poker/video games/posting on 2p2 from your parents' basement are based on the fact that so many early-20s kids still live in their parents' basement. What you've heard was more accurate pre-millennial kids.
