The mech engineers were definitely on a higher level than the average bio major, and all my classes were full of both of them.
I felt like a tard in college (bio-engineering major at a UC) because I think I was the only student in my major who wasn't pre-med.
It might have changed a lot in the past 15+ years but when I started there in the late 90's (I believe my class was either the first or 2nd year the major was available) it was ridiculously cuthroat, and at the time bio-engineering was basically a way to get you into med school. The curriculum really wasnt designed to prepare you for any specific job.
