The story with Blockbuster and Netflix is that Netflix execs had a meeting with Blockbuster and laid out a business plan that Blockbuster would be the brick & motor side while Netflix would be their online business.

Blockbuster at one point tried to catch up to Netflix on the mail-ordered DVDs side, and actually were offering a much better deal if you lived close to a Blockbuster (and this was when they were still everywhere). The three-at-a-time was the same price as Netflix, but you could bring your mail DVDs to the Blockbuster store and exchange them for B&M rentals, and at the same time their scan of your exchange would also trigger the next mailing; you'd get both rather than one or the other. You basically couldn't run out of rentals at any point, and of course they had the selection of literally everything through their website.

I was all about it, but Netflix had already locked down the market.
