Why would you rent a flat when you have half a mill in the bank?

Seems daft.

I'm just thinking hypothetically.

I should repeat that I don't want to do this. I'd like to be a normal person with a normal job who lives independently and is able to rent his own place.

I have a great girlfriend, but I'm not expecting to get married or have children, I just want to be normal really.

I just can't for the life of me see how anyone gets a job in this day and age when the market is flooded with competition.

Rasta,

You have a blog for this stuff.

Well I'm not really blogging. All I've ever really wanted to do on 2+2 was to discuss things like economics and sexuality in an abstract sense; the problem was that as soon as I expressed a troublesome opinion, people immediately began to quiz me personally.

At the moment I'm just answering questions.

Rasta,

Post 185 was a blog post about you. The questions were re: that post.

Fabian already explained what this thread is for.

Fwiw, you may find the Politics, Religion, Business & Finance, and a few other forums interesting for the type of topics you're interested in discussing.

There's also a dating thread "Ask a girl out" in the student life section that includes a lot of general discussion re: sex and sexuality.

The Lounge is also a great forum for you to check out. A lot more focus on the type of lengthy open free-form discussions of the type you seem to like, without the aggressive attitude from regulars that you'll often find in OOT. Check it out.

I actually really like the aggressive attitude of OOT. I like people giving it to be no-holds-barred.

Sure, they might be wrong or misguided or even dislike me personally, but it beats the hell out of having people agree with me. I love to have my opinions challenged, especially by intelligent people.

The Bruce Jenner stuff is really funny in particular.

Of the £1,500/mo rent, how much will go to council tax, income tax and whatever you call HOA fees over there? Are you taking home > £500-600 a month?

No idea. I think the tenants would pay the council tax though.

****ing awful, shameful way to live though.

Nothing wrong with earning money and profiting from property ownership after having come up from nothing, but to make money out of my sheer privilege of being born into noveau-riche upper-middle-class wealth would make me feel sick.

I really just want a job where I can give back to society and earn enough money to have the choice of doing the whole wife/kids/car/family normal lifestyle whilst doing it.

Maybe you secretly wish to be sexually dominated. Do you read this forum with your pants on?

Oh have you not seen? I love being sexually dominated! My girlfriend regularly blindfolds me and ties me up and I love it! I've also always been into femdom porn. Love it.

Actually on that subject (and a lot of people will probably like this), but my girlfriend has had to deal with some pretty gross sexist **** at her company recently. She definitely isn't the type to complain nor indeed make **** up (hell, she basically apologises for calling anything sexist (even if it really is) before telling me about it, but yeah, its definitely affected my views.

Don't get me wrong, I still hate the femenazi brigade who wouldn't dare criticise anyone without a white skin, be it grotesquely sexist rap videos or highly conservative versions of Islamic teachings, but instead berate harmless nerds like gamers, but I do hate genuine sexism and certainly am reconsidering my position WRT to it's prevalence given the fact that my (really quite resiliant) girlfriend is getting it in the neck. Happily enough she's moving on from her job very, very soon.

Good point. Those feminazis never criticize the treatment of women in Islamic nations or India. Maybe some day they'll see the light, but until then, **** em

Bull ****ing ****.

Look at Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Now THAT is a proper feminist, risking life and limb against an enemy that actually does fight back.

Any support from the femenazi mainstream? Nah.

Its the nerds that hit on them in clubs and embarrass them in front of their friends at college. Not Muhammed Abdul from Saudi Arabia who's lopping off clits left right and centre.

Priorities innit.

Okay Rasta, so South Asian feminists get all upset that Western feminists sensationalize women's issues in India, but I'm sure they're wrong and you're right because you read it on some MRA blog. Anyway, moving arguments from your blog back into OOT isn't the purpose of this thread, so sorry for the derail.

The more jobs I apply for, the more mystified I am at precisely how 'normal' people get jobs that pay enough for an independent lifestyle, although having said that, I know a fair few other people who are finding things tough as recent graduates in the UK.

As I say, this recent scheme I applied for had 40 applicants per place and didn't even pay a living wage! (only £16k). The idea that non Oxbridge graduates with straight As at A-level actually in some places hold jobs that pay £40k is baffling to me. There's just so much competition that one wonders where these people go.

So what exactly did you think that your career path would be with a degree in philosophy?

Why would you expect to earn much more than a starting wage with a degree that holds almost exactly zero real-world value?

It's frankly baffling to me that places pay £40k to straight A Oxbridge graduates just on the basis that they hold an Oxbridge degree in some obscure liberal arts subject. I'd rather offer these jobs to people who have actually worked for a few years and have real life experience rather than have hidden in the halls of academia studying obscure subjects of questionable value.

Why do you think they do that? Are they being irrational? Is the market wrong?

I made the choice when I had just turned 17, largely on the back of teachers at my Grammar school, as well as my parents and indeed every single resource out there telling me to 'study something I enjoyed'.

This was part of Labour's plan to get everyone to University.

If I could go back in time I'd definitely have chosen something completely different. Trouble is, your GCSEs (which you choose age 14) essentially dictate which A-levels you do (those are the exams which get you into university). So your making the choices that affect your life far too early on and with misinformation/counter-information to boot.

If I could go back in time I'd have simply become a dentist. Astronomical money (~£80k or so once qualified, even if your mid-twenties) for a job that's essentially 9-5 and really only intellectually challenging in terms of memorising things.

Still, aside from all of those things, I don't think its too much to ask (for anyone, with or without a degree), that they can find a job that pays a living wage.

My employer however, can simply shrug and tell me that I'm replaceable (true dat tbf) and not give me or any of my similarly overqualified colleagues a raise. Still, at least I get to work from home (which basically = days off) 2 days p/w. So in terms of £ p/h its not too bad).
