Reading through "The Trouble with Markets" by Roger Bootle and "After the Music Stopped" by Alan Blinder in an effort to help my essay/application for a job I'm applying for.

Its only £20,000 per year but goodness knows it'll still be tough to get it.

The more jobs I apply for, the more mystified I am at precisely how 'normal' people get jobs that pay enough for an independent lifestyle, although having said that, I know a fair few other people who are finding things tough as recent graduates in the UK.

As I say, this recent scheme I applied for had 40 applicants per place and didn't even pay a living wage! (only £16k). The idea that non Oxbridge graduates with straight As at A-level actually in some places hold jobs that pay £40k is baffling to me. There's just so much competition that one wonders where these people go.

Having said all of this, I do have some good news.

My parents have recently decided that they are going to buy a flat (probably for around £300k or so) in London to rent out, which (aside from increasing in value over time) should bring in roughly £1500 p/m in rent (3 bedrooms @ ~600-700 p/m - stamp duty+other costs etc.). Presuming that myself and my sister will share this inheritance when they die in 20 or so years plus our £1,000,000 home (which my parents purchased for £185,000 25 years ago), I'll be more-or-less set for life whatever happens.

However.

My reaction to this news was not happiness or relief.

In fact, I felt an immediate pang of incredible depression and disappointment at the fact that my well-being and security in life would be owed not to my own doing, but down to the sheer accident of my birth as the firstborn of the generation of homeowners who benefited from the London housing boom.

So why is this good?

Well, its made me realise that I do indeed desire achievement and independence for its own sake, rather than as a mere route to money, comfort and security. I wish to command respect for what I've achieved, rather than sheer luck of being born into a family which hit the housing jackpot.

Essentially, I've realised that whilst I don't have to work particularly hard in life, I do actually want to.

Rasta, tell your parents to leave it all to your sister. They will appreciate the fact that you want to learn to fly without a net.

The problem is that simply depriving me of money and suchlike won't teach me anything. Going on my previous track record, I'd likely end up homeless and forced into crime.

Besides which, it wouldn't be very fair.

Hmm, the OOT collective might find themselves in a spot of bother here as many posters insisted that £1200 p/m after tax (my current earnings) were enough for me to move out and live independently, including paying rent in London.

But yeah.

£500,000 + (£750 x 12) = £29,000 per year for 25 years.

Rent a nice flat for £1400 p/m, then that's £1,000 to spend each month on whatever you please. No need to work.

Rasta,

When you find yourself wanting to respond to an OOT thread, you should post that reply in here instead.

Ponch: "Hey, saw you over there holding your head (just did a sick sprint and was catching my breath) and didn't see your face and thought you looked like a bum loitering, so I came up to check it out."

Me: "Ah, well, I've been thinking of a more appropriate way of telling my wife she's a lousy barber, so I'll pass this information on, thanks."

Ponch: "Ha, right, but now I see you're a runner (wearing and carrying several items a bum wouldn't own) so it's all good."

Me: "Ok. (then turn to do another hill sprint)"

Ponch: "Wait. Can I see some ID?"

Me: "Why, you just said I'm not a bum but am a runner doing a workout. Can I get back to my workout now?"

Ponch: "Right, but there's a lot of copper here that can be stolen (points to a concrete slab that show's an inch of copper exposed and the rest would need to be hammered out from concrete) so I just want to be sure."

Me: "Am I legally required to furnish you ID?"

Ponch: "No."

Me: "Then I choose that, thanks."

Ponch: "Why you wouldn't want to give me your ID?"

Me: "Because I'm not legally required to do so and wish not to waste anymore time."

Ponch: "Well, I'm a little suspicious that you don't want to show me your ID."

Me: "And I'm a little suspicious as to why you want to see my ID when I have done nothing but try to get a workout in before dinner."

Ponch: "Well-"

Me: " Officer, am I being detained or am I free to go?"

Ponch: "You are not being detained."

Me: "Then have a nice evening (shake his hand and leave)"

Anyway, y'all pile up quick before I leave in the next 12 hours, as I likely won't be 'round these parts for a while.
As a fellow runner the oddest things about this story is that you're doing 50m hill repeats (what are you training for?) and that you'd carry any ID while running.

I've never even had £3,000 in my bank account, and frankly it looks like most people my age haven't either.

Besides, what sort of thing would someone my age even pay £3,000 for? aside from a car? (Which I don't need).

FYL if you're paying 3k for a tv.

To RMs point. A car, furniture, getting things done around the house (repairs whatever), a holiday, some electronics, theres probably more obv.

£3,000 (That's $5000) is a lot of money to spend on a TV.

Obviously I don't need the car, I'm not responsible for the house and my two-week holiday to Brazil came in at under £2000.

You were talking about between now and 25 years later so we can safely assume that you'll have to fork over the money in one way or another in those upcoming 25 years right ?
