I just realized all that exclamation point nonsense in emails is Gmail's fault. Just look at these suggested replies:

Johnny, I hate those "consider adding" prompts even more. Like what if I'm writing an email to my girlfriend and I accidentally click on a "consider adding" to my wife?

You're only allowed to use exclamation marks if you stop and ask yourself if Ben Franklin would use an exclamation mark at the end of this same sentence, and if the answer to that is yes.

I have probably used an emoticon or two in casual texts to my daughters. I’ve never used an emoticon in a legal brief and I doubt I’ve ever even used an exclamation point in that setting.
