Alobar, 27:

Maybe we could have some debates between contained posters re: who is the worse poster, with the winner being released from containment?

Those were 50m hill sprint repeats, but what's so odd about that? It seems to come in handy for trail marathons, especially those with 100% grade incline stretches, in my experience.

ID... yeah, I'd prefer not to carry it, but my wife is a freaky mess when I'm gone for 3+ hours when she thought I'd be home within 2 hours, so I wear a RoadID band on long runs.

The fact that you are doing 50m repeats to train for a marathon is what seems odd to me.

Most hill repeats are 200/400/600/800m at 5k/10k pace.

And 15 x 50m just doesn't seem like enough distance for a good workout. Then again, I don't do trail races.

But, whatever works for you. I was just curious.

These are 100% all-out intervals on a 95-100% grade hill. 50m at that incline and intensity is pretty challenging, and I'll do more than 15 when I'm not being hassled by police. However, these don't constitute my regular hill workouts, and I'm not suggesting it for flat or typical hilly marathons due to the grade of the hill, but for steep trail hill section courses, for sure.

For repeats, I'll do 200-1600m depending on grades. Sometimes I will drive out to this area with 6 miles of continuous elevation and bring a couple of bikes with me. I'll place a couple of bikes up there, drive back down and do some type of run up, cycle or run down variation, typically with a progression.

I don't know anyone that does 1600m hill repeats at 5/10k pace. And I've run with someone that has finished 99th in the Boston Marathon.

I also am in a hilly area. While I don't do trail runs, no one that does trail runs in this area does 15x50m (that isn't enough distance) or 1600 (that is too long of a hill repeat) repeats. I would think that bleachers would be just as good of a workout for the short repeats. 1600m intervals are a max for track workouts. No one does them for hill repeats... at least no sane person that isn't an Olympic athlete.

If you are an Olympic athlete, I apologize for my naivety.

Dude, again, I do far more than 15 of them when not interrupted. I was stopped after rep 15 and asked him if I could get back to my workout. I agree with the bleachers sentiment, in terms of leg and cardio workout, but it doesn't emulate the mechanics of running quickly up steep surfaces nearly as well as running quickly up steep surfaces does.

The 1600's and 6 milers are at only a 2-3% slope. Who told you that repeats are only repeats when done at 5/10K pace? If I do 8x1600 slower than 10K pace, are these not repeats? Do these "too long of a hill repeat" combined with traditional, shorter and higher slope repeats have no benefit for a course like the Comrades Marathon, which basically has no real flat surfaces?

Hey Randall,

Nobody cares whether the routine he is describing is real, or legitimate, or how your acquaintances have performed in the Boston Marathon.

This is at best a 35% grade. Most likely less than 35% grade. The steepest road in the world.
