In middle school I ran a couple of races as part of the SRLA program but due to some overly protective teacher I wasn't allowed to run the LA marathon which for a 13 yo me was soul crushing. I loved running but man, that just took it out of me and haven't ran a race since then OOT Athletic Club
If you're shooting for a half in that timeframe, definitely check out the Great Race of Agoura Hills. It's in late March and there are multiple courses/distances to choose from. It's all organized incredibly well and the routes are very scenic. I'm planning on the Pacific Half being my first at that distance.

I recommend going to a good running shoe store and getting analyzed and fitted. In LA there are several to choose from: A Runner's Circle, Road Runner Sports, A Snail's Pace, etc.

There's also the "Run Free" movie that was pretty good in my opinion. Not sure if the film adaption starring Matthew McConaughey is still on?

Definitely do that. Nobody can recommend a shoe for you without knowing your feet and potentially medical history. I own >10 different running shoes from various brands (Saucony, Brooks, Nike, Adidas, Asics) for different kinds of runs (racing flats, tempo run, regular relaxed, long run, bad weather). At a specialty store, they'll let you test run a couple of options to find the right shoe for your feet and needs.

So I had a coach work with me on Sundays and swam on my own 2-3 additional days a week. After 10 weeks of that, I went from literally not knowing how to do it, to knowing how to do it and doing it very, very, badly. And that's in a pool! Put me in a lake and kick me repeatedly and what little I had gained from all my training went out the window with a quickness.

wow, that incredibly demotivated me to learn to swim.

I bet some people on here that I could do it. It went very badly, I quit due to intense leg cramps. Since then its been on my list of **** to do. That was probably like 6 years ago or something. Realistically its never going to happen until I get the **** out of phoenix, no matter how desperately I try I can't make it though a summer here with any sort of fitness.

I'm trying to think of something motivating to add here. Hmmmm. Well, I can tell you that swimming is all about technique, not so much stamina in my experience, especially at a shorter distance. At the pool and at the race I've seen tons of fat people beating the hell out of me because they know how to do it. For me, that's a bad thing, because perseverance is my strong suit, not coordination. Maybe that's good news for you?

Also, a sprint distance swim (300M - 500M) is super short. My experience Saturday shows that you can get through it just in survival mode (and I was far from the last swimmer, which is crazy to me).

I wasted a ton of energy in the swim and paid for it over the entire race.
I've done one sprint triathlon and was a horrible swimmer coming in - I hired a coach and became competent by race day. I was kicked square in the jaw by another swimmer about 50m into the race and threw me off for a while. Recovered and did fine.

Also did the bike portion on a hybrid - didn't want to invest in a real road bike unless I knew I was going to do multiple, as I'm primarily a runner. It was grueling, with old women passing me by on their proper road bikes.

I found brick training to be really helpful - combining multiple stages in single workouts. Going from the bike to the run is an especially strange feeling on the legs.

With all that said, plan to do more in the future, once I get past my youngest kid's infant stage and I have more free time.

Yeah I got kicked and grabbed several times, and then stopped completely behind a logjam, and did not recover. Just survival mode the rest of the way. If I had to do it over again I would have been more committed to getting back into my stroke. To paraphrase Mike Tyson "Everybody's got a plan until they get hit in the mouth."
