I've been running 5Ks and 10Ks for a few years and today I did my first triathlon (sprint distance). Even after training pretty diligently I really struggled - the only thing I hadn't really trained for was swimming in a crowd, and it rattled me bigly. I wasted a ton of energy in the swim and paid for it over the entire race.
I've done one sprint triathlon and was a horrible swimmer coming in - I hired a coach and became competent by race day. I was kicked square in the jaw by another swimmer about 50m into the race and threw me off for a while. Recovered and did fine.
Also did the bike portion on a hybrid - didn't want to invest in a real road bike unless I knew I was going to do multiple, as I'm primarily a runner. It was grueling, with old women passing me by on their proper road bikes.
I found brick training to be really helpful - combining multiple stages in single workouts. Going from the bike to the run is an especially strange feeling on the legs.
With all that said, plan to do more in the future, once I get past my youngest kid's infant stage and I have more free time.
