I was amazed by both. Mark Kopfler, the lead singer of Dire Straits, performed barefoot in that video for Pete's sake!

This used to be Lounge material but everyone there's died of old age. In 20 years BBV4L will be making zZz posts like this.

I'm not surprised someone doesn't know about bands from 35 years ago. A lot of it seems like yesterday to me, so of course everyone today should know it. But then I think, "In 1984, what did I know about music from 1949? Could I name any popular groups?" Same thing with movies.

I've heard this name referenced in other media but I'm not familiar with them enough to recognize any of their work

1 Vaughn Monroe - Riders In The Sky
2 Frankie Laine -That Lucky Old Sun
3 Vic Damone - You're Breaking My Heart
4 Perry Como - Some Enchanted Evening
5 Jimmy Wakely and Margaret Whiting - Slipping Around
6 Andrews Sisters and Gordon Jenkins - I Can Dream, Can't I
7 Russ Morgan - Cruising Down the River
8 Evelyn Knight - A Little Bird Told Me
9 Frankie Laine - Mule Train
10 Al Morgan - Jealous Heart
11 Blue Barron - Cruising Down The River
12 Vaughn Monroe - Someday
13 Gordon Jenkins - Again
14 Russ Morgan - Forever and Ever
15 Perry Como - Forever and Ever
16 Gordon Jenkins - Don't Cry, Joe
17 Sammy Kaye -Room Full Of Roses
18 Bing Crosby -Far Away Places
19 Dinah Shore - Buttons and Bows
20 Bing Crosby - Galway Bay
21 Vaughn Monroe - Red Roses For A Blue Lady
22 Russ Morgan - So Tired
23 Evelyn Knight - Powder Your Face With Sunshine
24 Johnny Mercer and Margaret Whiting - Baby, It's Cold Outside
25 Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae - Whispering Hope
26 Sammy Kaye - Careless Hands
27 Perry Como and The Fontane Sisters - 'A' You're Adorable
28 Dick Haymes - Maybe It's Because
29 Tommy Dorsey and Charlie Shavers - The Hucklebuck
30 Gordon Jenkins - I Don't See Me In Your Eyes Any More

Most of these would have been unknown to me 35 years ago.

If we're talking old English musicians still touring, don't pass on Peter Murphy. Caught him a few weeks ago and was legit impressed. For you youth, look up Bauhaus...

I feel like the 1949 comparison suffers because it’s pre rock and roll - most of the artists Dom listed would be seen as heavily influential on a lot of music today, and are still in heavy airplay on FM radio across America. I would guess this has more to do with the fractured media landscape / post-Napster music industry than simply the passage of time.

How you doin'?

PJ, the sound for a 4-piece was HUGE...they've dirtied it up a little and got all fuzzy...oh, and if Zoe is opening for them there, don't come late! Great band.

I mean, most of my students don't know those acts, either...but think about it: Nirvana was closer to the Beatles in years than we are to Nirvana now...so crazy.

nice

even though I'm not a huge fan of their recent stuff, I am glad that it brought them to the mainstream and EH is finally making the money she deserves

I was the Technical Director on this show. TD in the credits. Skip to 6:00 to get past all the retro footage.

Taped two shows at the end of their residency at Hard Rock Vegas. I had 12 cameras in the switcher and another 3 roving in the audience that would be used in the edit.

I've heard of:

The Who
Robert Plant
Def Leopard
Duran Duran
The Cars

Only heard of Joe Jackson in relation to fixing the World Series.

I also thought of him as Michael's dad. Because of that, I always figured he was black.

I knew some of the songs but had no idea they were his, only place I'd ever heard of him being mentioned was on the Adam Carolla podcast - when he'd gripe that the Sirius/XM 80s channel wouldn't play a little Joe Jackson or his favorite: John Hiatt.

I go see a ton of concerts. I'm familiar with 8 on Doms list to varying degrees, and have seen 2 in concert (the who, Robert plant).

Music played on mainstream radio today is almost universally terrible, over produced garbage.

Weezer used to be good, but they suck now.

I'm 31

I've always liked Jimmy Dean and the Dreamers but that big band stuff was truly the bee's knees. Get on the trolley. Brought to you by Dr. Mcgillicuddy's Nerve Tonic.

I've also heard good things about negro music.
