Joe Jackson
One act I've always regretted never seeing is Joe Jackson. I loved him when he was paying punk-pop, I loved him when he was playing jazz-pop, I loved him when he was playing freakin' classical.
Jackson came up in the British music scene around the same time as Elvis Costello, and while he never quite got the accolades as Costello did, he did more radio airplay!
His latest album, Fool, is another great one - it recalls Night & Day/Body & Soul era Jackson.
I bought tickets for this L.A. show, but my gal couldn't make the trip this time. So instead, I took fellow 2+2er Daliman, and we drove out to L.A. from Vegas yesterday. After finding a nice Argentine restaurant for dinner, we walked a few blocks to the classic L.A. theater, the Orpheum:
Our seats were smack dab in the center of the balcony - but in the last row. (That's what you get for dicking around instead of immediately getting tickets for a sold out show.)
There was no opening act and Jackson came out with his band - it was a four-piece - and man, were these guys tight.
Jackson's tour was looking for some way to organize a show out of 40 years' worth of material, so he decided to draw on five albums, each representing a decade: Look Sharp (1979) Night And Day (1982) Laughter And Lust (1991) Rain (2008) and Fool (2019).He also had a couple of songs from other albums and some new covers - which was awesome, because my two favorite Jackson albums are I'm The Man and Body & Soul.
Here's the set list:
Alchemy
One More Time
Is She Really Going Out With Him?
Another World
Fabulously Absolute
Strange Land
Stranger Than Fiction
My House
Real Men
Rain (The Beatles cover)
Invisible Man
Wasted Time
Dave
Fool
Sunday Papers
King of the World (Steely Dan cover)
You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)
Ode to Joy
I'm the Man
Encore:
Steppin' Out
Got the Time
Alchemy (reprise)
Damn good show. The only complaint was not having better seats and 4 drunk women standing in front of Daliman, dancing and woo-hooing a lot. He asked them to stop, but they wouldn't Oh well. The one good part about being in the last row was that I could stand in the aisle behind the seats, bopping around, running to get drinks, etc.
Seriously, Jackson is 64 and still in incredible voice...he's also pretty funny, telling the audience stories and quips between songs.
For me, the highlights were his new songs - they really are incredible - and "Sunday Papers," "Another World, the Steely Dan cover (!), and "I'm the Man."
The sold-out crowd loved every minute, turning many of better-known tunes into sing-a-longs.
If Joe Jackson is coming to your town, think about going to see him - he's amazing.
Gotta fast turn around, because I'm back in Vegas already so my gal and I can go see Metric Sunday night at the Cosmo!
wow that's some list. can anybody beat 2? i only recognize 2 names
Well hopefully one of the two was Robert Plant; if you don't know who the eff Led Zeppelin is, you are disqualified as a first-worlder.

Know them all except Hooverphonic and Veruca Salt. But I am also an old guy and my mind remains mostly uncluttered by music released in the last 20-30 years. For example, to the best of my knowledge, I have never intentionally heard a single song by:
Lady Gaga
Taylor Swift
Kanye West
Jay-Z
50 Cent
Usher
Beyoncé
Katy Perry
Miley Cyrus
Ariana Grande
Selena Gomez
Christina Aguilera
Kelly Clarkson
Metric used to be one of my favorites. Seen them a handful of times.
Can't wait! This'll be my third time seeing them....my gal knows that if Emily Haines, for some reason, wants me...I'm gone. Of course, it's the same for her.

if we're talking "intentionally looked up a song by them" i'm zero on dom's list. your list of what you think is modern music is hilarious too; christina aguilera rofl
literally i've heard The Who when i'm walking through a hardware store and i recognize it from car commercials. def leopard's drummer had one arm; couldn't tell you if i've ever heard a song by them or not. maybe in an elevator in a casino.
i'm not ****ting on the bands or the fans, i'm sure the music evokes great memories from 50 years ago but for me it evokes car commercials and hardware stores. again, i'm not being an *******, dom made this thread and jokingly is like, "you wouldn't recognize him, it's just some old english guy" and i'm helping him with his joke by sharing my real life experiences
i'm not being an *******, but seriously i don't even know if duran duran is a band or a guy. honestly never heard of a band called The Cars. this is just a crazy obscure list. if dom said like, "rolling stones, aerosmith, paul mcartney" i'd be like cool awesome i'm not a fan but i've heard of them at least. like they're literally all grandpas but i've heard of them.
