lbr - sorry to hear that, dude. Not much worse than kidney stones. Bad news is that once you get one stone, you are far more likely to get another. Good news is that your definition of pain gets redefined to grouping things into either kidney stones or not kidney stones, and everything in the second category is meaningless. I also know what it is to lay on the floor puking purely from pain and being unable to do anything else. The worst part is when the puking prevents you from taking pain meds because they just come right back up. Which means the pain continues, which means you can never get the meds down. My pain tolerance is extremely high but I wouldn't wish kidney stones on anyone.
Gotta echo the advice to switch to water & lemonade/limeade as your primary drinks, and maintain intake volume of >2.5L/day. Depending on the stone composition (usually calcium oxalate), citrate inhibits stone formation by binding with calcium. This prevents the calcium from binding with oxalate, which means less chance of calcium oxalate stone formation. SCIENCE, bitches! Note that citrate is not as relevant for non-CO stones.
The issue with lemonade is if you drink one with high sugar content, you get the downsides of sugar. You can take potassium citrate tablets instead of lemonade to get the citrate without the sugar.
Reducing salt intake is also helpful. Drink a lot to constantly be flushing the kidneys.
Since I'm just some random on the internet, here is a link to a double blinded study:
POTASSIUM-MAGNESIUM CITRATE IS AN EFFECTIVE PROPHYLAXIS AGAINST RECURRENT CALCIUM OXALATE NEPHROLITHIASIS
and if you want to learn more about stones and prevention techniques,
here is an excellent website run by a doctor at UoChi who specializes in kidney stone research. He has a lot of useful advice and has a fun writing style as well. He's not as much on #teamlemonade due to the sugar issues - both general sugar issues as well as stone specific issues like how they raise urinary calcium levels.
This article where he hates on sugar while also talking about how much he loves it is pretty funny.
de cap - remember how I loaded up on all those simply lemonades in Hawaii? Don't recall if I ever explained it to you but yeah this was why.
Dodger -
read this. Oxalate hysteria is pretty overblown in the media re: stones, because most journalists don't understand concepts like bioavailability, chemical binding, etc. High oxalate foods like tea are not automatically "bad".
