If people have a problem with this they can go with a prepaid carrier that sells the iPhone - you buy the hardware full retail but have a likely cheaper plan but more importantly no contract. I'm not sure if ATT/Verizon/Sprint offer a prepaid for iPhone (I would think they wouldn't), but Cricket Wireless does IIRC - here's a good article talking about prepaid carriers in the US:

Yeah, ATT, Verizon, and Sprint each have Droid phones on prepaid, but not iPhone. Cricket has the iPhone 4 and 4S, and have the 5 available for pre-order, but only has 4G in one market. That said, $55/month for unlimited voice, text, and data would be pretty good, if they actually had 4G.
EDIT: Virgin has the 4 and 4S, but not the 5 yet.
