Because people want the latest and greatest. I have typically been like this but am pretty set right now on not getting 5 and waiting for the 5S.

It may or may not be necessary. You hear many different opinions. I still do it when I get a new smartphone. Twice when I first buy it and then once a month after. It can't hurt.

Oh, and I have good battery life with the 4S when others say they don't. Maybe doing this helped it. I don't know.

You could have just walked into the store at the right time. Basically for the first 2 months after the 4S was released last year, Apple stores would get just a small number of the 4S each day. If you wanted one, you had to show up and wait in line each day.

In December around Xmas time, they changed to where they wouldn't sell an iPhone to a walk in customer even if they had one available. This happened to me. Everything was done online. You had to go online to Apple's website after 9 pm each night and reserve what they had coming in the next day. You then came into the store to pick the phone up the next day. I tried this a few days and it was very frustrating.

I just like walking into the store and picking up the phone. For the most part that happened in January at Apple Stores and the various carriers. Now stories are coming out about serious shortages on the 5 with one of the big problems being the availability of the screen. My feeling is that things will probably be worse this year.

Shouldn't have to, I downloaded/installed directly on phone

You may be able to download through iTunes though

Edit: you will need full battery so you may have to plug in for that, but the update was there and able to download

I saw iOS6 a couple of weeks ago on a 4s. The maps kickass, but a little heavy on the bandwidth in some settings. Turn by turn looks good; might feel like a wasted $50 on my Garmin app. Not sure which I'll use as my default.

Nice to finally see a clock app for the iPad and to have Siri.

Those who have the 4s and have updated to ios 6, can you chime in with your opinion please? When I updated my old 3g to I think it was ios 4 it slowed it down massively to the point it was basically unusable as a phone, I don't intend to upgrade my 4s for at least 6 months so don't want to update if it's not the right thing to do.

I didn't notice any any huge slowdown on the iPad 3 and I thought they had the same processor.

4s seems fine here. 3G really was an old phone so I don't think you'll experience any significant slowdown with the 4s

For people who have never had an iPhone, is there a good site/forum to go to with regular tips/tricks for it... shortcuts and stuff... good/recommended Apps, etc. ?

I know a lot of the apps I use on Android won't exist for Apple and vice versa, plus I've never used Siri.

gonna probably just go into the att store sometime in the next week and hope. if i have to wait a little while before they restock, that's cool...i still have the 3g. haven't really used it for much lately except browsing 2p2, betting while at the bar and listening to music at work, so i'm really looking forward to being able to use the gps w/o the phone puking on me. haha

****'s gonna seem like lightyears faster than this old thing.

So, what's the big deal with the new lightning plug thingie now that the 30 pin is retired? I suspect people are going to be pissed they can't dock their new iPhone 5 on their iHome or mp3 dock/player/cd player whatever. Are all those companies like bose, iHome, etc. going to make a dock specifically for the iPhone 5?

There's an adapter you can buy. Another way for Apple to get $30 out of us.

There are some apps in the Android market as good or better than Siri. Just search 'office assistant'. I have Speaktoit and it works just fine. But the novelty of it wore off quickly and I haven't used it in months.

This thread is pretty good for that kind of thing. iLounge is my favourite all around site for tips and reviews.

After getting a nonsensical response from Siri, I asked "What is the meaning of this?" It gave me the dictionary definition of "this".
