My niece got her a cheap old phone because there's almost nothing she'd do that is processor or memory intensive.

Will the default mail app log into her Yahoo account? Does it look the same?

She uses Google Maps on her desktop, so I assumed she'd want the same experience on her phone.

My mother can't drive at night. She also likes to travel. Hence, Uber and Lyft. In the future, I'd expect more elderly to use those services than young people. It's silly for someone who drives a couple times a month to keep a car (and pay for insurance). My mother drives a lot more than that right now, but she may not in the future. If she ever needs to stop driving altogether, I would like her options to be things she's been using for years rather than something confusing and new being thrust upon her.

Good call on the banking app.

I guess that makes sense about Uber/Lyft and the elderly, I would just think that the app might be a little confusing for someone used to taxis, and getting the payment method set up would be as well.

Even if you do all of the set up for her, she'll still need to open the app, request the right service (UberX vs. the other options), and properly locate/drop the pin. Then at the end, re-open the app to rate the driver (keeping in mind that anything below a 5 is bad for the driver). Plus she'll be getting two texts each time she uses it - one to confirm the Uber request and another to say that the driver is there.

Maybe I'm just under-estimating the mental/technical capability of a 77 year old, or over-estimating how difficult that actually is. I just see potential for confusion, particularly for a new smartphone user.

Has she used Uber/Lyft before?

Never used ridesharing before, but is going to San Francisco next month and will be using it there. She still has her mental faculties; she just can't see well enough to drive at night and is not very technologically sophisticated.

Niece is going to set it up, including entering her payment info.

I'd like to buy a used or new iphone5s.

Checked in eBay already but was also wondering which places would be cheapest to buy?

With the 6 coming out soon I was planning to wait it out but need a faster iPhone as my 4s is tilting me due to the slowness.

I'd wait, the new phone is just a couple months away and you'll be kicking yourself later.

If your phone is slow, try backing up all your data, factory reset your phone, and then restore your data and just the apps you need. Should speed it up significantly if you haven't done that in a while.

At least, it used to back in the days of 3G and 30 (when I had an iPhone).

How much would I be able to sell my 4 for when the 6 comes out?

100 bucks maybe? If you're patient maybe $120. Just sold one for $130 a few weeks ago.

I have a weird i phone 5c problem. I've googled this and found similar problems but nothing exactly the same. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas.

My phone keeps sending blank text messages to the same UK mobile number which isn't in my address book. It's a supermarket bought mobile that receives the texts. It always goes to a generic voice mail if you dial the number. It seems to send them when I wake the phone up after its been screen locked for a while. Ideas I have read about have been to turn off i messages or find my I phone. Neither has worked.

Eventually I turned off all location services and now it has stopped. This isn't ideal of course. My service provider doesn't know what the problem is.

Its a bit of a leap but could it have some hidden program that tracks the whereabouts of the phone? Its a recon as my original phone's screen sensor broke and the provider replaced it with a recon one. It had this problem from the start. I'd really like to get to the bottom of this.

Now THAT is something that I'd backup and reset for.

I doubt there is anyone tracking me. It was in factory state when I got it, so what ever is causing it was on the phone already.

I would plug it into a computer and try to restore it with iTunes. See if it stops you or anything comes up?

Could be a bug or an iPhone that hasn't been correctly refurbished :S

Worst case scenario, take it into an Apple store and get them to fix it/swap it out.

The weirdest thing has fixed it. I saved the number the texts were going to, to my address book, then deleted it. No more texts

Is there any reason to have all my mobile applications stored on my local hard drive? I have 15 gigs worth of applications backed up on my computer and I don't see a reason to keep them around. Is this how iTunes keeps an image of my phone backed up or something?

All your app 'purchases' get automatically transferred or downloaded to an authorised computer or device.

You are exactly right - as a back up. You can delete them off there if you like, as the purchases will stay with you Apple ID for an entire lifetime and will be available to redownload at any time.

Have an iphone 4 now. Getting a $99 deal to upgrade to a 5s at target tomorrow. Really looking forward to a better processor. Walmart had $79 upgrade but couldn't do it for some reason.

Congrats!

But in my opinion, its worth a wait until October as a new iPhone may be released soon if you are looking for a bigger leap?

Meh I'm fine being one generation behind. I got the 4 when it first came out and I got one of the ones with a few big hardware problems so I'd prefer to have one that's been out for a bit honestly.

Plus it'll probably be significantly more expensive and it'll take forever to get.

I heard that (hahaha, apple rumors) that the 6 will be set up so that you can only use Beats By Dre, which is ****ing atrocious. That or you'll have to buy a separate adapter to use regular headphones, or you know, not POS headphones.

I don't know if that is even feasible, but it is worrisome.

I really doubt that - won't they be including generic headphones with the phone like they always do?

Those could be "Beats" though.

But still, no way, no way in hell

You should still wait until the iPhone 6 comes out, since that usually drops the price of all the others. $99 for a 5s is a great deal, though, so I don't know if that will do down.

I'm positive this isn't possible as long as they use the standard 1/8" jack, but I could be wrong since I'm only bar talk smart.

Not happening

That's gotta be a rumor started by an apple hater
