I'm gonna be paying $11 per month for my next contract, unlimited everything.

Wait, you guys are shocked at $114? How much are you paying?

I have a corporate discount and my rate isn't that far from that. I haven't really looked around as I use a lot of data and ATT has me grandfathered into unlimited data.

£12 for unlimited texts, 500mins, unlimited 3G for me

Include your contract lengths guys otherwise this is (relatively) meaningless.

I'm on 5c 32gb, 1gb 4g data unlimited everything else, 18 month contract, ~£35/month

I'm going sim free next contract. I'll just buy the phone from Apple directly. I might sell the phone when the IPhone 6s comes out, but I'm likely to stay with the 6 until the 7 comes out. Over the two years I'll save the cost of the Phone.

Are American rates that much worse?

I have a 2 year contract, up in August (whatever the date the 5 came out was). Unlimited Data, Texting, 500 minutes that rollover, free nights and weekends.

We have 10 lines all with unlimited mins, texts etc and they share 20gb of data and it's <$400/month

Att has better plans these days and with 10 of us some use less data so I could use 5gb/month if I wanted

Paying $100/month for cell phones these days is a leak

If Verizon is your only useable Cellphone provider, you're screwed.

So I'm moving to the US for a couple of months at least, possibly longer term. While it's uncertain still I'm looking for a short-term, prepaid service provider for an unlocked iPhone 5.

I will have more of a need for data than calls I'd say, and I'll be in and around SF and Silicon Valley if that makes a difference at all.

Service reliability, price and contract flexibility are my main considerations. Any general advice in finding a provider?

Someone just told me to check out Ting, which is on the Sprint network. Sounds pretty cool actually, apparently you can lump a bunch of devices on the one plan and pay only for what you use. Don't suppose anyone has any experience with these guys (or the Sprint network generally)?

I've been having major battery drain since the last update. Anyone know anything about that?

with the latest iphone expecting to be released ~september, if i wanted to sell my current iphone when would be the most profitable time to do so? also, any good recs on websites who buy used iphones?

i assume if i had to sell a month before the new iphones shipped, then i'd just be without phone for that time right? like i can't get an offer from a buyer and wait til i receive my new phone to send the used phone in?

Could not find another active iphone thread, so here goes. I have an android, so know little about iphones.

My 77 year old mother was just given an iphone 4, and I'm wondering which apps she should have.

Either I or my niece will be installing the apps, as she has no idea how to do anything like that. So we don't want anything that has to configured/changed while in use. Probably doesn't want anything like Pandora or Youtube, as she doesn't even like streaming on her desktop.

So far:

Google Maps
Yahoo Mail
Uber/Lyft
Moviefone
Something to take notes
Some sort of picture gallery/viewer
Some sort of calendar/schedule keeper

Any suggestions?

Thanks

She won't use any of them, so don't overthink it.

She'll use very simple apps that do things she would otherwise go back home to do on her desktop, hence mail, maps, and movie times being the first three.

All the stock apps work great for what she is looking to do - Notes, Photos and Calendar

The phone already has default apps for everything except for Uber/Lyft and Moviefone. I would strongly recommend just sticking with the first-party apps as much as possible. They are generally the more accessible and easier to find support for than third-party apps, and a new user would never know the difference.

The Yahoo! Weather app is really good. So good in fact that Apple redesigned their stock Weather app to look more like Yahoo's.

My Grandma likes to play Words with Friends but for some reason makes all her moves at like 2:45 in the morning. I think she plays on her computer via Facebook - but that still fits with things she could do on the phone that she would otherwise be doing on a computer.

Her bank probably has an app.

Why so cheap?? A 4??? Why get her a phone from 2010, it's slow and you will make her not like smartphones.

This can be a difficult topic to get someone that age to wrap their head around. An iPhone 4 should be fine, especially in this case where it won't be doing very much other than making calls and reading e-mail. You can explain to them how much has changed with phones since 2010 or even 2012 and they will follow what you're saying. However, my explanations are generally met with a sigh or a look that communicates, "things weren't always this way. It used to be that you bought something and it was good for 20 years, and if it wasn't then it was cheap and not well-made."
