me too. Does this mean we get ours for sure on the 21st? Or does ours take 2weeks just like everyone elses?

I am going to get the 5 soon, depends on when I can get in the AT&T store to pre order but I am torn on white/silver and the black/slate. What is the consensus on dudes with white phones, people are telling me its gay. Also has anyone seen these in person?

I don't think a white phone will make you any gayer.

I was up around 3am when I got my order through, and I'll still be waiting two weeks for it to ship. Doesn't matter much that others will have their iPhones over a week before I have mine, but it still bothers me a little. Mainly because the preorder process feels like a game that I lost. If I hadn't stayed up last night and got the same result ordering this morning, I wouldn't really care.

You should find out what color phone Tim Cook has and get the other color.

I can't quite make sense of the new resolution. Previously 960 x 640 (3:2), now 1136 x 640. Ok, they want to keep exactly the same width while adding extra pixels to get to a 16:9 aspect ratio. But 640 * 16 / 9 = 1137.777 (repeating). So why not used 1138 x 640 instead to approximate that ratio as closely as possible? Granted it's only two pixels difference, likely imperceptible, but still, there must be some reason they chose 1136 instead of 1138. Just curious if anyone knows.

1136 x 639 is exactly 16:9 though. 1080p content will be displayed with one line of pixels blacked out?

Regarding the NASA v iPhone 5 quote, it should be noted that apple didn't just introduce the world to smartphones or tiny computers. They just introduced smartphone iteration #1,538.

Boo. I tried last night to preorder, and the site was absolutely flooded. I tried this morning and it said I could do it, but 2 weeks to ship, in which case I"ll just wait 'til Bell has it, and get it at a subsidized rate or whatever.

For all you Americans/people from Canada who do the preorder through phone provider...how does that work?!?! You just go to the Verizon site and then choose a plan and get an automatic subsidy on the phone??? Or do you go on the apple site and there is an option to click on your provider and do it that way? Or has everyone who has purchased one paid full price?

Maybe that's done in Canada as well and I just don't know. My plan was just to go to the Apple website, buy the stupid thing @ full price for $800 and then sell my 4S on kijiji to "subsidize" the 5 vs. getting a subsidy through my phone company. However, I have been 'due' to get an upgraded phone for almost a year now and they keep texting me saying I'm eligible for an upgrade.

Is it stupid to alternate between buying phones outright and subsidizing? My original plan was to get 3GS through contract, then buy the 4S outright, then get the 5 on subsidy through my cell provides, and keep alternating. This was before my provider allowed early upgrades (at a cost, of course). Then it seemed stupid and I figured I"d just always buy phones outright from now on, and sell my old one.

Just put in a preorder upgrade for a 32GB white/silver. Says it went through, we'll see when I get it.

if the preorders for both ATT and Verizon online say it would ship ~28th then does that mean they will be sold out as well the morning of the 21st at retail locations?

anyone know

Ordered mine as well. 32GB. I am hoping 32gb will be enough, I think it will. Also the arrival says by the 26th so that kind of sucks its 5 days late!

for canadians ordering: go to your providers website, you will need to create an account and log in to place a pre-order. did so with rogers and it went smoothly (i was the 72nd order placed in Ontario at 5:49am today. pre-orders werent even supposed to be available till 6am!)

It didn't for the last couple of releases. I bought 4 on launch day by walking into an AT&T store and my friend did the same with 4s.

I'm sure some stores will sell out but I think the store stock is independent of the preorders.

My quote was ship date of Sept 21-25. I hope to get it next Friday. Completed the order at 3:09 cuz their servers were slow as molasses.

I guess you'll get top dollar either the Friday evening or Sat when the fanboys get shutout and have to have it. My guess is a couple of hundo profit. Anywhere from $150-300 maybe

Wild guess, but I would assume because 1136 is a multiple of 16 (i.e. hexadecimal)

I have unlimited data w Verizon and if I switch and upgrade to the iPhone 5 I lose that. Is it worth it to find a way around this? I currently only use 1.5g of data w 3g. I am not sure if 4g is going to make a difference to what I do. I also use my laptop and iPad so not everything is via phone.

Just a thought, what's to stop you from buying the IPhone 5 unlocked and just plugging in the Verizon sim? Just don't go for the subsidy from them

I can do that. But is it worth the $300-400 extra to do so by buying the phone from elsehwere?

Combining that with 1136 x 639 being exactly 16:9, those dimensions make some sense to me now.

Interesting explanation @ MacRumors forum - basically that it comes down to the math that it would take to scale the two resolutions. One can be done with only integer math while the other would require more costly floating point operations.

Quote:
Neither 1138x640 nor 1136x640 are "true 16:9 aspect ratio", but 1136x640 is actually more appropriate for scaling.

16/9 = 1.77777778
1138/640 = 1.778125
1136/640 = 1.775

They chose 1136 because it's divisible by an integer (71) that's also a multiple of 639 (very close to the horizontal resolution).

16*71= 1136
9*71 = 639

If they chose 1138 they would have to scale using a floating-point factor (71.125):

16*71.125 = 1138
9*71.125 = 640.125

And the horizontal resolution scaling result wouldn't even have been an integer (640.125), so it wouldn't have worked well.
