Well I mean I'm not trying to be the fastest guitarist in the world, I just want to be able to play a simple guitar riff but even this modest goal is beyond my reach tomonth.

I just saw All is Lost (really good movie btw http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2017038/ ) and I had a question for people who know about boats. Limited spoilers follow- In the movie Robert Redford's boat gets ****ed up and he has to flee to a life raft and try to survive at sea. While he is on the life raft there is a survival kit with water/compass/flares/etc. So he is floating there for a while and eventually a huge cargo ship comes by and he has to try to get its attention which is really difficult obviously. So he shoots his flares and waves his arms and stuff. I had the thought of why wouldn't a basic survival kit contain an air horn? Wouldn't that be something that would be cheap/useful/not take up much space? But then I thought maybe a big ship would drown out the sound of an air horn so it would be worthless. So the question is- in that situation would a ship be able to hear a standard air horn from someone on a life raft?

I haven't seen the movie. I think a signal mirror would be a better. You can flare at night and signal during the day.

The problem with the air horn is those big cargo ships have closed bridges and a lot of the times no one is on deck. The sound would only carry so far and you would also run out of juice. A mirror would probably be better in that spot if flares are included. Did Tom hanks have signal mirror in Castaway? I can't remember.

My only expertise is I have a wilderness survival merit badge.

Finished Doctor Sleep, without spoilering, I was a little surprised at how it ended. I don't think it was as good as The Shining (a tall order IMO) but I found it an enjoyable read

I think he only had flares. But it seems like he should just have all 3 options, it would be such a small addition to the kit. And it was a badass top of the line life raft I think because it was pretty heavy duty with a roof enclosure and supplies and stuff.

Yea I would want all three too. No reason not to have it. I think I was mixing up some other survival movie. Whenever we lose a tennis or basketball over a fence yelling Wilson is my go to joke. I still get laughs.

Standard lifeboat kit would always have a flare. You can see a dayflare for a few miles, whereas an air horn would be pretty worthless unless you were super close.

Not imo. Impossible to take it seriously when it's lacking a bald eagle and handgun turrets.
