hanster,

The police shot a Indian (feather) guy just for having a knife in the very city where I live!!!* I haven't left the house since because clearly we've lost all sense of control.

This is a silly, paranoid overreaction on your part. Grow up.

*- it's a weird story where the cop apparently legit felt threatened by the guy and shot him, so even though everybody agrees that he made a terrible judgement call, they can't prosecute him because cops are allowed to have bad judgement with lethal force.

I wouldn't go there.

Dibs,

Comparing Seattle cop shooting to Mexico cartel violence is ******edly absurd even for you.

Wouldn't the prospective seller of the business have an interest in providing security to visiting prospective buyers?

FFS I'm obviously not trying to say that the situations are at all analogous- but his paranoia over visiting a border town has as much basis in fact as my hypothetical cop fear.

Me, I would go. What the hell, it'll be an experience, you're like at least 60% to survive and then you get to impress chicks with embellished stories about your experience there because they've never been there, they don't know the difference
60% survival, IMO, is a taaaaaaad low

Doesn't look like much where you are

I still want to know how long you're going to be there. If its like weeks or months - yeah I get the worry. If its a few days... whatever.

Hanster, for some reason I've assumed you're Asian, is this correct? If so, I don't know why, but I think it makes you safer.

OP, do you really feel your existence is that important in the grand scheme of things? Or even in the not-so-grand scheme? I'm sure you're a nice guy and would leave people behind who would miss you if you were murdered, but they're farts in the cosmic wind, too. Let's try to have a little perspective here.

OP, maybe you should move back to the safety of your mama's basement. ffs, grow a pr and do your job. Leave all your expensive wardrobe & accessories at home, do your thing without attracting attention, & then leave when you're done.

H, In all seriousness, it seems likely to me that either this is your boss brain-farting or they're already planning it. Easy way to find out is to talk to them about the upcoming trip and say something along the lines of, "Hey, I read that the area is kind of dangerous. Am I going to get a driver or something?"

This seems like more of the "killing gang rivals" kind of Mexican town as opposed to the "kidnapping wealthy foreigners" kind, so I think it makes you safer. Also, there's your inherent knowledge of the martial arts.

Thoughts on this fact's relationship to his safety (his ethnicity, not our shared assumption)?

Also, were you trying to say it was super-obvious he's Asian?

agree with this, but no reason to not try at least get some more benefits out of this. Unless ofcourse you have no leverage and they can easily pick someone else.

Whoa I thought this was for like a 6 month assignment. I wouldn't even worry about this, until I arrived there and then I would be slightly freaked out for a few days but not admit it.

Let's hedge our bets and go halfsies on a life insurance policy. That way, it's always going to be a win-win situation.

OP I would get more info....that borderland beat article's almost a yr old. Maybe it's calmed down enough where you can have your cake and eat it to.....that is, fly down there, do your thing quickly, and fly back w/o anything to fear.

Contact the us state dept.
contact the company's legal dept., ask if there's anything they suggest
Contact the US consulate closest to where you're staying
maybe someone in the Mexican gov't can help

It's worth finding out more info, seeing as how your kinda stuck btwn a rock and a hard place here.

you're bottom of the totem pole. no one's gonna bother hijacking/kidnapping you. on the downside, you're bottom of the totem pole. no one's gonna bother paying a ransom if you get kidnapped.

just go, eat a taco, drink a cerveza, bang a hot local girl and get outta dodge.

also, pick up a new mask and cape for El D as a thank you for his excellent advice. don't forget to put it on your expense report.
