Ugh normally I'd be much ruder with my response but you genuinely don't seem to get what's going on half of the time.

Your coat is objectively ugly. It looks old and thrifted and resembles a knitted upholstery that was popular with older men's suits in North America in the late 80s and early 90s. It's also wrinkled. It looks practical and warm and exactly what I'd expect to find a nerdy woman from eastern europe wearing.

You are well liked by most people here. So, in an effort to be nice, those people are going to compliment you on your ugly coat. Most people think it's better to be vapidly nice to nice people than unnecessarily mean. I can confidently assure you that the silent majority agrees that it's an ugly coat, but is likely too nice to say anything.

If you want to get deeper into why people are nice to you:

1. You're nice/innocent.
2. They're patronizing you, like they would a forum puppy or mascot.
3. Female privilege.

In this particular incident, I'd say these three factors contributed in a 5:3:2 ratio, resulting in general politeness towards you.

Thinman has a few issues with women, enjoys being "edgy", and isn't that great at social clues. So he misconstrued those ratios as being something closer to 2:2:6. He further misunderstands female privilege to be entirely sexual like some sort of evolutionary psychology bull****. His inability to articulate this misapprehension results in him lashing out with "durr durr they just want your tits". He thinks he's being productive by revealing why men are lying about your coat, but all of these liars already know why they're lying. People are nice to women for no reason, even if they aren't going to be able to have sex with them or see their tits. I'm sure some of the losier losers here would enjoy seeing your breasts but you're an asexual child to most of the men here.

While his comment is technically sexual harassment I think that's a tiny sliver of what's actually happening here.

Begging for apologies on the internet is just sad.

Hm...... it is surprising amount of stuff in this post with which I agree. It is so long that it kinda makes no sense to go point for point, but few main things with which I agree:

People are mainly nice to me because I am nice. With innocent.... it depends on exact definition of innocent.

They definitely cut me some slack because I am a woman. I highly appreciate it and I think the return on investment of cutting me some slack is positive also for men. Or they just wouldn't do it.

Many totally are patronizing me. I am perfectly fine with that as long as they don't try to do it in physics . I absolutely don't strive for the role of top dog in everything. And many know a lot of stuff better than me and deal with a lot of stuff better than me. So a patronizing role for them is totally appropriate.

I understand perfectly well, what it means when people say nothing about looks and 50% of the time when they say positive stuff. That is also fine with me. I especially appreciate the comment of the Minimalist to my jacket. It was honest and on point.


I can't say anything to what you wrote about Thinman, but have a feeling that lbr is right here. No matter what is going on on a deep level or not with Thinman his posts are sexual harassment. I expect an apology. If I won't get one I will escalate it along the lines in my previous post. You can think that it is sad, but that is exactly what will happen, because every step in this process is entirely within my control.

DrZ - thank you for the soliloquy but none of that is the point. Whether her jacket is fashionable enough for you, if it looks nerdy to you, whether or not it's wrinkled, whether people like her as a pet (lol). None of that is the point.

The point is Lapka posted a photo and Thinman's sexual comment made Lapka feel uncomfortable and harassed.

Thinman now knows this and should respond accordingly.

and yes, as pokeraz said, this is why we can't have nice things. I appreciate lapka posting photos to go with her stories, but how can we expect more of the same if she has to worry about stupid comments from stupid men?
