Matt Damon is Bon Jovi

They're themselves in every movie (largely). The masses like that more than DDL immersing himself into becoming some Portuguese gardener from 1957.
To me, both of those guys have jump-off-the-screen star power.

It’s true that Damon table-selects well. The only real criteria for big action movie leads is “be believable,” and Damon was believable in the Bourne role, which I realize is what really launched him. I guess on that basis alone I shouldn’t be mystified.

Eventually learned to just stop reading him.

The Firm was great though.
I quit reading Grisham for that reason after about four books. He had a knack for getting me hooked and invested, but then it was like his mama came in at midnight and said, "Wrap it up, Johnny. Lights off in 15 minutes."

Like, making Cocktail work as a fun movie? That’s all Cruise being extremely charismatic. That movie is ****ing ridiculous and stupid, and I love it. I would only view it with scorn if you cast almost anyone else.

i recently watched a good chunk of Risky Business, mostly for Rebecca nostalgia purposes (it was released my freshman year, and i just might not be talking about the movie).
it's hard to deny Cruise had a presence
All The Right Moves hit theaters just a couple of months later, so almost every friday night movie date for the next several months included his face on the screen.
Top Gun came out the summer before senior year and movie dates got even better.
i will never be able to repay the debt of gratitude i owe to Tom and Kelly for the memories they helped create.
at its essence, Top Gun wasn't much more than foreplay for a couple of horny high school kids.

You know.. with all this Scrabble talk:

Maybe we should organize a Scrabble tournament!?

Visiting friends a few years back, we decided to play Scrabble. My friend warned his wife that I'd be really good, because I did the NYT crossword at lunch every day.

Nope. Need the clues.

Biggest Scrabble play of my life was dropping QUOIN on a skilled player, on a triple word, and getting challenged.

It's a good movie (and I'm not a Brendan Fraser fan). His best performance is probably Courage Under Fire or True Grit... and he wasn't the main character in either..

I was just kidding. It was supposed to be like saying Cruise's best performance was Taps.

Glad you liked it.

Well I can’t possibly know you would joke like that; you once said the chase scene in The Roxk was good.

My favorite Cruise is A Few Good Men, even if that requires looking the other way on, “I’m a lawyer and an officer in the United States Navy. And you’re under arrest, you son of a bitch.”

Feeling a little bit of love, even from you LKJ.

I regret that I'm BOS. However, it would be nice to know in the ban comment who the douche was (other than me).....
